Animal Care Specialist Lead

As our Animal Care Specialist Lead, you will be responsible for providing high quality, humane animal care while maintaining the highest standard of medical care for the shelter residents. The Animal Care Specialist Lead will assist the DVM with exams, perform diagnostics, treatments, and communicate treatment plans with staff and adopters.

We Care Animal Rescue is a no-kill, private non-profit organization established in 1982. Our shelter serves as a refuge for homeless cats and dogs in the Napa Valley. We foster and promote the welfare of animals by finding their forever homes, tending to them medically and behaviorally challenged, and providing animal centered services to the community. Responsibilities:
Veterinarian Support:
• Assists Veterinarians with our animal patients with examinations, treatments, and record keeping; maintains accurate and up-to-date records; helps maintain the controlled drug log
• Administers oral and injectable medications, subcutaneous fluids, vaccinations, and microchips; knows the pharmaceuticals that are prescribed by the Veterinarian
• Monitors the health, safety, behavior, and appearance of the animals; reports observations that require medical care or other attention and end of life care
• Acts as the point of contact for communications with partnering veterinary clinics
• Reads animal body language and acts accordingly towards fearful or aggressive animals

Shelter Coordination and Safety:
• Assists the Shelter Director in managing intakes
• Trains new staff and volunteers; provides ongoing training and mentoring of current staff and volunteers
• Cleans and disinfects animal areas to maintain a safe and sanitary environment
• Oversees Animal Care Specialists
• Maintains files and records
• Complies with high standard of safety practices and regulatory laws
• Provides courteous, prompt, and responsive service to visitors, volunteers and the public

Qualifications
• Passionate about the mission of We Care Animal Rescue
• Registered Veterinary Technician License, a plus
• Minimum of two years’ experience working in a veterinary practice or shelter medicine
• Minimum of two years management experience, preferably a not-for-profit or an animal welfare organization
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite
• Able to represent the organization in all interactions with the public and stakeholders; good customer service skills
• Demonstrated ability for accuracy, thoroughness, and neatness in work product
• Ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy environment and to changing deadlines and priorities
• Capable of working independently and as a member and leader of a team
• Good oral and written communication skills
• Willingness to work flexible days and hours, including evening shifts, weekends and/or holidays
• Must be able to lift, move, and carry objects and animals up to 30 pounds; use of arms above the shoulder is sometimes required
