The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is Iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter, caring for thousands of pets yearly.

The ARL serves people and pets from across the state of Iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more. About the job:

This position is responsible all facets of Animal Care, which includes routine care and facility cleaning and by leading the entire Animal Care team.

Job Duties

• Oversee all aspects of Animal Care and Facility Cleaning at all Animal Rescue League facilities
• Ensure all animals are properly taken care of at all times including areas of nutrition, hydration, grooming, exercising, and socialization
• Oversee disinfection protocols and chemical maintenance
• Ensure OSHA requirements are met for Animal Care, Grooming, and Laundry employees
• Create tools to measure success and compliance with IDALS rules and best practices in the industry
• Responsible for accuracy of information entered into the animal sheltering database (Shelter Buddy) and maintaining animal records
• Ensure all equipment and facilities are maintained and in good working order
• Performs a morning walk through to confirm all animals have water and signs of life
• Delegates opening duties to keep closing as fast and efficient as possible

People Care
• Oversee the employee/volunteer lifecycle (recruit, train, counsel/coach, review and terminate) for Animal Care team members
• Responsible for creating schedules, assigning tasks, recording absences, managing breaks and PTO for Animal Care team members
• Work cooperatively with all employees and volunteers, recognizing the talent and commitment thy bring to the organization
• Cultivate positive relationships through professional, courteous, and educational interactions while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events
• Provide prompt, courteous and excellent service to all internal and external customers at all times

Animal Care
• Report any observed health, behavior or temperament issues to medical/behavior staff or supervisor, as appropriate
• Participate in stress and disease reduction efforts through purposeful and compassionate handling and placement of animals in the shelter environment
• Assist Animal Care Technicians with morning and closing cleaning and feeding as needed

Facility Care
• Keep general work areas and hallways clean, orderly and maintained daily
• Partner with Facilities Supervisor to operate and maintain equipment in good working condition

Additional Responsibilities
• Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to Animal Rescue League’s policies and procedures
• Ensure a safe work environment, follow all safety guidelines, and model safe work practices
• Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, customer, animal or the organization at risk
• Perform other duties as assigned at any Animal Rescue League location

Ideal candidates will have the following -
-Valid driver's license with a satisfactory record (required)
-HS Diploma or GED (required)
-Supervisory experience (required)
-Two years customer service experience
-Ability to work in a fast pace environment
