Job Description
Performs difficult, skilled work in managing the daily operation of the County Animal Shelter. Delegates work, supervises, and evaluates subordinate personnel. Performs related duties as assigned. Work is performed independently and under the general supervision of the Director of Public Works.Assigns, schedules, and evaluates the work of subordinate shelter personnel.
Makes routine inspections to review work in progress by subordinates.
Meets with members of the public having business with the shelter.
Oversees the shelter’s adoption program and ensures that the shelter’s animal population is housed in a humane and sanitary manner.
Ensures that the shelter structure and equipment are properly used and maintained.
Directs the maintenance of detailed records of animals which are impounded; supervises a protective health program for injured and sick animals that are impounded; and inoculates animals.
Supervises the selection and euthanasia of animals that must be humanely destroyed.
Directs the quarantine of animals that have bitten humans.
Ensures that drugs and Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) controlled substances are properly used and that inventory control is maintained.
Prepares the shelter’s annual budget and purchases supplies, equipment, and services for the shelter.
Supervises the shelter’s finances, prepares deposits, and pre-approves expenditures.
Prepares and submits advertising materials to the newspaper, radio, and television.
Plans and implements shelter special events and vaccination clinics.
Ability to handle after hour, weekend, and late-night shelter related emergencies and emergency veterinary calls.
Represents the shelter during meetings with County Officials and the Director of Public Works.
Remains up to date with industry trends and regulations.
Ability to handle conflict and stressful situations.
