Hiring Range: This position is anticipated to start between $100,000 to $105,000 annually, depending on experience.

Position Summary: The Business Intelligence (BI) Software Engineer’s role is to strategically design and implement BI software and systems, including integration with databases and data warehouses. This includes selecting, blueprinting, gathering requirements, designing, and rolling out BI solutions to end users. The Business Intelligence Software Engineer is also responsible for ensuring high levels of BI availability through support functions and in-depth testing.

Strategy and Planning: Assess and cultivate long-term strategic goals for BI development in conjunction with end users, managers, clients, and other stakeholders.

Acquisition and Deployment: Conduct research and make recommendations on BI products, services, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts. Evaluate and select database/data warehouse components, ETL software, metadata management tools, and database design solutions.

Operational Leadership: Direct, organize, and lead projects in the implementation and use of new BI software tools and systems. Lead the integration efforts for merging BI platforms with enterprise systems and applications. Work with project managers to ensure that data ingestion, transformation, and pipeline functions meet business requirements for project completion. Conduct job duties and responsibilities according to the organization’s business systems development methodology and/or its Systems Development Life Cycle (SDLC) methodology. Monitor alerts and troubleshoot BI tools, systems, and software; performance-tune these applications as necessary. Mentor and/or provide leadership to junior members of the team.

Engineering: Design, code, test, and document all new or modified BI systems, applications, and programs. Design, develop, and troubleshoot databases and reporting data models. Analyze user requirements and design solutions, including functional and technical requirements documentation. Produce ETL/ELT design guidelines to ensure a manageable pipeline infrastructure for the BI system. Using both traditional and cloud-based tools, follow Best Friends’ best practices, policies, and standard operating procedures to design, code, test, document, and deploy data pipelines to transform and curate raw data into data useable for analytics.

Information Security: Develop, test, and implement best practices within the BI ecosystem to ensure sensitive information is protected and only available to those with a need and the appropriate approved access to view the information.

Skills & Experience

A minimum of 5 years of experience in developing BI and OLAP solutions.
Comprehensive data warehouse analysis and design experience, with full knowledge of data warehouse methodologies and data modeling.
Strong understanding of relational database structures, theories, principles, and practices.
Strong understanding of OLAP structures such as star schemas and cubes.
Understanding of and experience with traditional SQL data warehouses
Expertise in the MS BI Stack, including:
Strong experience in developing SSIS and SSDT packages in Visual Studio
Demonstrated ability designing and building ETL plans using MS SSIS
Expertise in developing and performance tuning SQL and T-SQL
Experience with complex T-SQL queries and data relationships
Understanding of and experience with modern cloud data lake platforms and technologies (AWS preferred) a huge plus.
Experience designing and building data pipelines with the AWS serverless big data stack S3, Glue, Python, Lambda, Athena, Cloud Formation)
Experience with Snowflake and ETL/ELT pipeline tools (Fivetran, Matillion, etc) strongly preferred
Demonstrated ability to solicit and analyze user requirements and build data models and BI applications according to specifications.
Experience with Enterprise CRM environments and databases, preferably with Blackbaud CRM.
Experience in the Tableau Desktop and Tableau Server BI environments a plus.
Experience with Agile methodology and Git a plus.
Proven customer-focused approach.

A baccalaureate degree in computer science, information systems, computer engineering, or a related field or equivalent experience.
MCSE: Business Intelligence certification preferred.
Physical Requirements

Able to work at a computer for extended periods of time with repetitive typing, arm, and hand motion.
Able to occasionally work outside of normal business hours for support and deployment activity.
Able to participate in on-call rotation as necessary.
