Job Summary: Under the supervision of the Chief Medical Officer, provides quality preventative care for publicly owned dogs and cats and provides support to the shelter medicine program. Maintain medical standards of care set forth by the SPCA of Texas.
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Wellness Clinic Duties
o Provide compassionate and patient customer service to clients. Build and establish rapport with client base, demonstrating exceptional customer service and communication.
o Provides quality preventative medicine to the community that includes vaccinations, education of preventative flea and heartworm treatment, and microchips.
o Provides wellness exams and treatment within the scope of what SPCA can provide.
o Perform surgical sterilization of cats and dogs in a high-quality, high-volume setting.
o Oversee all aspect of veterinary care to include pre- and post-operative care, anesthetic administration and monitoring, emergency care, restraint, and treatment.
• Shelter Medicine Duties
o Work to ensure the best possible environment and outcomes for shelter animals.
o Perform surgical sterilization of cats and dogs in a high-quality, high-volume setting.
o Oversee all aspect of veterinary care to include pre- and post-operative care, anesthetic administration and monitoring, emergency care, restraint and treatment.
o Examines, diagnoses and treats injured and sick sheltered animals.
o Assists in the development and/or review of sanitation, treatment, and euthanasia protocols.
o Assists in the prevention and control of disease in sheltered animals.
• Administrative Duties
o Direct and assist in the evaluation of veterinary technicians as it pertains to medical protocol and patient care.
o Participates in divisional strategic planning and assists in the development of performance measures and monitoring progress towards meeting goals.
o Provides general supervision to technicians performing
o Hold training for staff when needed
o Be a consistent and visible presence on the floor to answer questions, make timely adjustments, offer support, receive/give feedback, lend a hand and foster understanding and commitment to SPCA of Texas mission.
• Other Duties
o Develop professional, friendly, and mutually beneficial relationships with local veterinarians, promoting SPCA of Texas and our mission within the veterinary and animal welfare community.
o Perform all work in accordance with SPCA of Texas Protocol
o Behave in a manner that always upholds both personal and professional standards and a commitment to practicing the highest standards of medicine, upholding the veterinary code of ethics.
o Be an ambassador for the SPCA of Texas, sharing the work and mission with your friends and family and be knowledgeable of the various ways to support our work.
o Stay current on new trends and opportunities to improve animal care, surgical protocols and techniques, sanitation and disease control.
Applicant Information:
• Applicant must have Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent from an AVMA accredited school OR will graduate from an AVMA accredited school of Veterinary Medicine with a doctorate degree in Veterinary Medicine by hire date.
• Applicant must have current Texas State Veterinary License and DEA license or the ability to obtain both before the start of employment.
• Must have or obtain USDA Accreditation within six months of hire date.
