Job Description

The Director of Operations at the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA will oversee all shelter programs and operations and be responsible for oversight of the animal care, customer service, medical, volunteers, and foster programs and related staff functions. Under direct responsibility of the Executive Director, the Director of Operations will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all regulations and guidelines while leading a team of 15-20 in implementing best shelter practices to maximize the impact of RHSPCA’s lifesaving efforts.

*Set the example of high functioning, positive work style while coaching and mentoring animal care team members and volunteers through their individual career growth and development. This position has direct supervision of 15-20 team members with four direct reports.
*Implement and adhere to best animal shelter practices and organizational policy.
*Plan, organize, coordinate, review, evaluate and direct efforts to achieve the Shelter Operation Program Goals in support of the organization’s mission.
*Responsible for operational compliance with current federal, state, county and local laws, regulations and guidelines that affect shelter operations.
*Oversee facilities maintenance, crematorium operation, and utilization of volunteers by Shelter Operations Team.
*Ensure quality care and humane treatment for the animals owned by the RHSPCA.
*Perform duties in a manner which encourage attainment of RHSPCA goals.
*Responsible for overall accurate record keeping, maintaining data integrity of all animal records, and statistical reporting for all program(s) related activities to appropriate parties.
*Hire, supervise, coach, and train Shelter Operations staff and provide regular, ongoing, and timely feedback to staff and volunteers.
*Conduct meetings with staff to review procedures, discuss workplace concerns, and share ideas to successfully implement the Shelter Operation Program goals.
*In partnership with shelter veterinarians and department supervisors, maintain up to date protocols and policies for Shelter Operations, and implement/enforce all policies and protocols to protect the medical and behavioral health of the animals owned by the RHSPCA.
*Continuously monitor and enforce contractual compliance of our City and County agreements
*Communicate with and work closely with department managers regarding people service (including customers, volunteers, fosters) as well animal care.
*Clearly communicate in person, via email and telephone with individuals within the organization and outside to ensure success of the programs.
*Continually observe conditions within the organization and recommend changes/improvements to the Executive Director to ensure efficient use of resources and sustainability of operations
*Maintain our positive, collaborative relationships with other agencies, rescue organizations, medical providers, city and county staff, corporate entities and local media
*Work with contractors as needed to ensure functionality and maintenance of facilities
*Provide detailed monthly activity reports to the Executive Director (on Finance, Shelter statistics, Incidents, Personnel).
*Function as a spokesperson for the organization when needed.
*Oversee inventory management to ensure adequate quantities of supplies needed and fiscal accountability for shelter operations expenses.
*Participate in the budgeting process for Shelter Operations programs and adhere to approved budgets.
*Conserve finances whenever possible.

RHSPCA is seeking a progressive, quick thinking, dynamic individual who brings animal sheltering knowledge and people skills along with passion, commitment and enthusiasm for our mission and accountability for their work. The ideal candidate will have at least 2 years of experience managing processes and personnel in a role similar to this position.
