Reporting Structure: Reports directly to the Board of Directors

Job Description:

The Executive Director of the Scituate Animal Shelter (“SAS”) is responsible for overseeing all business and operational activities of the organization while providing strategic leadership to advance the organization's mission of improving the quality of life for both the companion animals and the people of our community by providing shelter and placement for homeless animals and support through community services and humane education. The Executive Director will lead from the shelter facility allowing for active engagement with the staff, volunteers and community members. The listed responsibilities are subject to the general oversight of the Executive Director and can be delegated to staff, committees and volunteers at the discretion of the Executive Director.

Key responsibilities:
• Strategic Planning: Develop and implement strategic plans to advance the organization's mission and objectives in alignment with its vision.
• Fundraising and Development: Oversee fundraising efforts, including grant writing, donor cultivation, special events, and campaigns to secure financial resources necessary for SAS operations and growth.
• Financial Management: Manage the organization's budget, finances, and resources effectively, ensuring transparency, accountability, and sustainability.
• Program Development: Continuously assess community needs and develop relevant and sustainable programs and services, such as adoption programs, education initiatives, and community engagement.
• Animal Welfare: In collaboration with staff, ensure the highest standards of care and welfare for all animals under the care of SAS, including proper housing, medical treatment, and enrichment.
• Stakeholder Relations: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, including donors, volunteers, partners, government agencies, and the community at large.
• Community Engagement: Partner with community groups, businesses, media, governments and other animal welfare organizations within the community. Serve as the primary spokesperson for SAS.

• Staff and Volunteer Leadership and Management: Directly and through staff, develop, lead, motivate and manage all SAS staff and volunteers. Maintain a climate that attracts, retains and rewards a diverse staff of employees and volunteers who support and promote the mission.
• Human Resources: Oversee all human resources, including recruitment, employment, direction and management of all employees. Partner with the Human Resources Committee to determine annual salary and benefits for staff and address any personnel issues.
• Education and Public Relations: Raise awareness of animal welfare issues and promote responsible pet ownership through public education and other initiatives. Working with staff and consultants, produce relevant communication materials to further development activities and elevate the reputation of SAS
• Compliance and Legal Affairs: Ensure compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards, as well as the organization's policies and procedures.
• Board Relations: Work closely with the Board of Directors, providing regular updates, seeking input, and collaborating on strategic decisions and governance matters.

Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field (e.g., nonprofit management, business administration, animal science).
• Previous experience in nonprofit management, preferably in animal welfare or related fields.
• Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrated ability to fundraise, manage budgets, and lead teams effectively.
• Passion for animal welfare and commitment to the organization's mission.
• Knowledge of animal care best practices, relevant laws, and industry trends.
• Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders and adapt to changing environments.
