Job Description

Help find quality foster homes for our dogs.

At Guide Dogs for the Blind, we prepare highly qualified guide dogs to serve and empower individuals who are blind or visually impaired throughout the U.S. and Canada. We sometimes need to tap into our remarkable pool of volunteers to open their hearts and homes to our dogs that need temporary care in a comfortable environment near one of our campuses. As Foster Care Coordinator, you will facilitate the successful placement of dogs into appropriate settings, assisting with recruitment, retention, and recognition of Foster Care Providers (FCPs).

What you’ll do:
• Respond to queries involving the foster care program, interview applicants for prospective placements, and maintain applicant and volunteer records
• Conduct interviews, at GDB and in-house, of new FCPs to assess home safety, condition of other pets, and applicants’ skills
• Counsel and provide training for FCPs about dog behavior, care, and handling, including introducing dogs to new homes and managing behavior and medical problems
• Evaluate each dog’s medical needs, behavior, and temperament, and review all available quality placements for the animals
• Arrange details of placement and provide updates to staff as needed
• Stay in communication with FCPs to reassess plans for individual dogs and meet their changing needs
• Provide dog care supplies for foster care providers and maintain inventory of foster care supplies, including ordering items as needed

What you’ll love:
• The enthusiasm, dedication, and passion of our volunteers
• The ability to help provide loving foster care for dogs under medical care, awaiting placement, or in other short-term situations
• A role that gets you directly involved in the care of our special dogs
• The camaraderie and support of our incredible GDB team
• You’ll appreciate our generous benefits package that includes medical/dental/vision/life/disability insurance, 403(b), tuition reimbursement, and great wellness perks, including an onsite gym.
• You can bring your dog to work!

The qualifications you’ll need:
• Demonstrated understanding of customer service and successful interaction with the public
• Experience in assessing dogs’ health, temperaments, and behaviors and/or conducting dog training, behavior modification, and placement
• Experience using Salesforce, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Ability to safely handle a variety of large breed dogs, weighing up to 90 pounds
• Availability to work 30 hours a week, including weekends
• Excellent time management skills with the ability to work independently
