Job Description

Responsible for the management of all daily activities performed in the medical department and the daily
documentation of those activities in Shelter. Expected to communicate staff expectations in a clear and
positive manner so that a cohesive Medical team is developed and maintained and to willingly assist in all
medical aspects of shelter programs.
Essential Duties
 Provide leadership and sound management practices to all Medical staff.
 Oversee the daily medical activities performed in all areas and surrounding grounds of the shelter to
ensure proper procedures are being performed correctly and promptly.
 Oversee that vaccinations/medications are scheduled and performed, data is entered promptly and that
revaccinations are scheduled accurately.
 Ensures the disposition of animals is carried out timely to help control costs associated with holding
animals beyond the required time. This includes participating in euthanasia decisions per the
Euthanasia policy, and processing.
 Routinely meet with Operations Director and other shelter leaders to review new information, discuss
procedures and staffing needs or concerns.
 Train all relevant staff on proper medical procedures.
 Problem-solve and work within a small budget to provide the best possible care. Responsible for
managing department budget.
 Maintain an awareness of upcoming events, whether onsite or offsite participating with planning and
execution when Medical is needed.
 In addition to overseeing Medical, will assign tasks, perform attendance reviews, build team work and a
positive culture; draft and communicate progressive discipline when necessary.
 Interview candidates and assist in the selection process for departmental hires
 Schedules staff to ensure coverage at all times
 Participates in training all new medical employees, consistently following-up to ensure procedures and
policies are being adhered to at all times
 Effectively manage overtime, gaining proper approvals when necessary.
 Ensure staff has tools and supplies needed to perform their jobs. Ensure tools are in good working
order and or repairs made as needed.
 Have a thorough working knowledge of all aspects of Medical procedures, as well as ensuring they are
being followed consistently every day. Provide ongoing updates and appropriate suggestions to
policies when needed.
 Time manage self and employees. Monitor employees and tasks throughout the day in all animal care
areas. Work alongside when needed and be a team player, including during employee absences.
 Willing and able to work the necessary hours to ensure the job has been completed thoroughly and
properly. Working weekends and holidays may be necessary in order to insure proper medical care is
administered.
 Plan daily so that all tasks are completed in the shelter in order to provide proper care. Will need the
ability to adjust the plan when needed, communicating with Operations Director immediately when
adjustments are needed/made.
Required Education, Experience & Knowledge
 A genuine interest in animals and their well-being.
 Previous supervisory experience strongly preferred
 Willingness to learn new procedures, recognize problems and use problem solving skills to make
necessary changes for the overall well-being of the shelter.
 Communicate effectively and professionally with co-workers, management and the public at all times.
Promote positive relationships with the general public, volunteers and staff while promoting our
programs, policies and philosophies.
 Data entry and general knowledge of pet population software.
 Practice candor, clarity and commitment in all communications.
 High School Diploma/GED required
 Licensed Vet Tech certification strongly preferred, or related education in the medical field
 Minimum 1 year experience with animal medical care; and willing to obtain CET within 6 months.
Working Environment
Possible exposure to infectious organisms, animal waste, allergens, chemical materials requiring OSHA
Material Safety Data sheets and potential hostile animals. Noise level is generally loud.
Physical Demands
Individual will be required to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 pounds throughout a normal workday.
