Wags & Walks is a 501c3 nonprofit dog rescue in Los Angeles. We are a community of dog lovers working to promote shelter dogs as the best dogs in the world through advocacy of our unique family-friendly foster and adoption programs.This is a rare opportunity for an experienced and entrepreneurial Lead Vet Tech to play a crucial role at a growing rescue organization. We’re looking for someone with 7+ years of hands-on Veterinary experience but also a strong desire to innovate and help us expand our medical reach. The ideal candidate must be comfortable zooming in and rolling out best practices for intake and zooming out to build strong partnerships with outside medical partners. This role will get to help guide the path of the organization's medical program and decide what larger impact W&W can make in the community.
They must be well organized, motivated and possess a strong work ethic; and have the ability to positively interact with the volunteers, fosters and staff in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment, while remaining calm, focused, consistent, resourceful and efficient.
Duties & Responsibilities
Be the face of the organization’s medical team both internally and externally
Scope out, define, and roll out best practices for both in-house medical processes and external partnerships
Perform regular wellness exams at the adoption center and ensure all dogs have received appropriate medication and care
Perform medical tasks when needed such as administering medications, vaccines, de-wormer, flea meds, sub q fluid etc. We’re looking for a knowledgeable medical professional who wants to be hands on as the team grows!
Hire and train new team members as needed
Lead intake of all new dogs and assess when a dog needs to be seen externally
Manage day to day operations for the growing medical team (including hiring)
Collect & track dogs medical history, shelter records and treatments
Help establish and teach proper safety & disease prevention protocols, and make sure they are being practiced properly
Track medical supply inventory and reorder and restock as needed
Possess an understanding of the vets we use, the services they perform and rescue costs
Help grow network of partner vets within the LA area including by researching, building and maintaining relationships with vets who can offer fair rescue rates
Be backup on-call emergency medical contact
Manage vet bills and help provide weekly updates
Monitor disease control guidelines and ensure they are consistently met
Qualifications & Qualities
A valid registered Veterinary Technician Certificate issued by the California State Board of Medical Examiners in Veterinary Medicine (preferred, not required)
7+ years of hands on animal care experience with management experience
Must have a passion for the rescue mission and mentality
Must be able to work a flexible schedule that includes evenings and weekends. Sunday - Thursday preferred.
Must be able to lead and communicate clearly and effectively with a diverse group of employees and volunteers.
Must have excellent people management, customer service experience, proven attention to detail, good organizational and time management skills.
