Job Description

The Humane Society of Utah (HSU) is seeking an experienced grant writer to join our staff on a part-time basis. Grant writing contractors will also be considered. This position reports to the Development Director and works closely with managers across the organization to research, secure and report on grant-funded programs and projects. Only candidates with a successful track record in grant writing and management will be considered.

Ideal candidates must be capable of managing multiple deadlines and priorities, and be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment both independently and as part of a team. Excellent research/writing/proofreading/editing skills needed. The ability to think strategically regarding submissions that will provide the best ROI for the organization is vital to success in this position. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing current grant contracts as well as securing new sources of grant and foundation funding.

Minimum of a Bachelor’s in Communication, English, Nonprofit Management or a related field, with 2+ years’ experience working in a non-profit grant writing role. Candidates should be ready to provide samples of past grant submissions during the interview process.

Required Skills
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Passion for animal welfare and a love of working with animals, including previous experience with dogs and cats, is preferred. Must be comfortable working with all sizes and breeds of dogs.
Minimum of two years’ experience grant management. Bachelor’s degree required.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including demonstrated writing/proofreading/editing skills in the preparation of grant requests.
Excellent research skills and a drive to continually find new opportunities for grant funding sources.
Stellar relationship building skills and ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders around innovative ideas and programs.
Commitment to appropriate use of sensitive and confidential foundation data.
Excellent time and project management and follow-up skills.
Ability to work well under deadlines and to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Ability to establish and achieve quantified objectives.
Equally comfortable working independently and in a team environment.
Positive outlook, upbeat, energetic and not afraid to take initiative.
Experience with Excel, Word, Adobe Acrobat DC, and Gmail is required. Raiser’s Edge/NXT experience is a plus.

In collaboration with the Development Director, plan and execute HSU’s grant strategy, annual grant schedules and revenue goals.
Responsible for all activities required to prepare, submit, and manage HSU grants.
Perform prospect research using the Foundation Center database as well as others to continually identify key funding opportunities.
Gain a thorough understanding of the various programs within the organization via interviewing department heads and team leaders, and working with that knowledge to grow opportunities for grant and foundation funding.
Analyze, monitor, and report out on metrics, data, results, and expenses to ensure the appropriate use of restricted grant funds at all times.
Comply with all grant reporting as required by grantors, and provide stewardship to current grantors.
With the Finance Director and Development Director, maintain current financial records for grant tracking and reporting.  
May be asked to assist with other development department projects as requested, including helping staff major fundraising events as part of the development department team.
Other duties as assigned by the Development Director.
