Practices in accordance to principles of veterinary medical ethics, all shelter policies, local, state and federal regulations.
Understands and practices herd health principles as well as individual animal care.
Establishes and maintains ongoing training for Animal Care staff.
Performs high volume, high quality spays and neuters on shelter animals.
Performs high volume, high quality spays and neuters on cats during free clinics and the low-cost public assistance program.
Performs additional surgeries including, but not limited to, cryptorchids and hernia repairs.
Performs physical exams and diagnostic/medical procedures in a way that delivers high quality care while minimizing the shelter animals’ stress and discomfort.
Develops, reviews, revises and monitors veterinary medical protocols.
Assists in the creation and review of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Partners with shelter staff and volunteers on the recognition, treatment and prevention of infectious and zoonotic diseases.
Coordinates with Animal Services Manager and Animal Care Supervisor to schedule outside veterinarian visits for shelter animals.
Partner with Animal Services Manager and Animal Care Supervisor to develop protocols for cleaning, sanitation, disease control, feeding and general care to promote a healthy environment.
Consults with Animal Services Manager and Animal Care Supervisor on final disposition of animals.
Maintains controlled substance records and storage in accordance with DEA requirements.
Coordinates with Animal Services Manager and Animal Care Supervisor in the ordering of medications and supplies necessary to treat the illness or injury of shelter animals.
Consults during animal welfare investigations and provides expert witness testimony. Supplies a high level of medical care to neglected/abused animals to ensure thorough documentation of medical finding for criminal prosecution of perpetrators.
Actively maintains all required animal health records in the shelter database.
Actively contributes to the programs and services that support the shelter’s live outcome mission.
