About Us:
Fluvanna SPCA is a small, forward-thinking, open-admission animal shelter with a 93% live-release rate whose mission is to rescue homeless dogs and cats and to place them in permanent, loving homes. We are working to adhere to modern, evidence-based philosophies and policies to ensure minimize fear, anxiety, and stress for our animals while they’re with us and to shorten length of stay. We are a 501c(3) non-profit and provide pound services for Fluvanna County, with an engaged board of directors and passionate volunteer base to support you.
Your Role:
As Shelter Manager you’ll work closely with our Board of Directors to refine and execute our vision, ensuring seamless daily operations while championing the well-being of our animals.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership and Vision: Inspire and lead our team, managing shelter operations with a focus on no-kill principles and evidence-based practices. Work with the board and staff on programs to enhance animal welfare and advance adoption success.
Operational Quality: Oversee shelter logistics, from managing staff to ensuring facility maintenance. Implement best practices for animal welfare, adoption, and community support.
Financial Stewardship: Manage budgetary responsibilities, including overseeing funds, processing payroll, and maximizing the impact of shelter resources.
Team Development: Hire, train, and motivate an engaged team. Conduct performance evaluations, identify training needs, and foster a culture of curiosity and improvement.
Community Engagement: Act as the face of Fluvanna SPCA in the community. Assist in outreach efforts and social media, and foster relationships with donors and partners.
What We’re Looking For:
Experience: Substantial experience in an animal shelter. Familiarity with Fear-Free and No-Kill practices is a plus.
Leadership Skills: A proactive, self-motivated leader with a knack for problem-solving and change management.
Communication: Good communication skills for diverse audiences.
Organizational Skills: Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute projects while maintaining a high standard of animal care and shelter operations.
Adaptability: A growth mindset with a willingness to embrace and lead through change.
Requirements:
Three years experience in an animal shelter (strongly preferred), and a minimum of one year supervisory experience.
Knowledge of animal welfare issues, including pertinent legislation and standards, and commitment to the no-kill philosophy of the FSPCA.
Demonstrated ability to effectively manage and supervise individuals. Ability to establish and maintain a respected leadership role. Ability to effectively delegate authority while retaining control. Ability to foster effective teamwork within the organization.
Ability to multitask and solve problems in a fluctuating environment.
