The Dumb Friends League Veterinary Hospital at Colorado State University Spur (CSU Spur) is hiring staff veterinarians to work at our state-of the-art donor-subsidized urgent care facility and teaching hospital. We provide accessible and high-quality veterinary care to under-served communities in Denver using an incremental care approach to medicine. Our veterinarians never have to turn away a client due to an inability to pay and the families we help are genuinely grateful for our help. Many of our patients diverted to our hospital avoid the need to relinquish their pet or consider euthanasia for economic reasons. As an urgent care hospital and HQHVSN clinic, case management is generally limited to same day oversight. Full time veterinarians work four 10s, with no “on-call” hours.

Purpose of Position: This position provides compassionate veterinary care to pets and their families who would not otherwise have access to care and may support all or some of the services offered by the Community Veterinary Services department, including urgent care, spay/neuter in HQHVSN clinic, and vaccine clinics. Based at the Dumb Friends League’s Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur, many of our surgeries are performed “on-view” for visitors of the CSU Spur campus. CSU Spur programming is targeted at K-12 students, with the mission to inspire STEM careers and future veterinary professionals.

Responsibilities
Perform comprehensive patient examinations and develop diagnostic and/or treatment plan options using an incremental care approach for patients with urgent/sick care needs.
Perform and interpret diagnostic studies including diagnostic imaging, bloodwork, and in-house cytology.
Perform surgeries and comprehensive dentistry procedures, including surgical extractions, in an on-view setting.
Provide end of life services.
Opportunity to perform high-quality high-volume spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats.
Conduct brief wellness examinations and provide vaccinations at high-quality high-volume vaccine clinics located within the League’s priority neighborhoods.
Effectively and compassionately communicate with owners of pets and the community.
Manage and maintain accurate medical records using a cloud-based/digital practice management software system.
Provide support and clinical mentorship to externs and interns, including direct observation, training, and assessment.
Contribute to and lead initiatives to improve processes and procedures.
Participate in regularly scheduled doctor meetings and journal clubs.
Cultivate a culture of collaboration, teamwork and learning within veterinary services and throughout the League.
Opportunities to participate in donor events, meetings, and tours.
Serve as a veterinary ambassador with community partners, promoting the League’s mission, goals and strategic initiatives including Socially Conscious Sheltering and Animal Communities to veterinarians, vendors, the public, and other animal welfare related organizations.

Work Conditions and Physical Requirements

The Dumb Friends League’s Veterinary Hospital at CSU Spur provides an “on-view” experience for visitors to the CSU Spur campus. Staff joining the Community Veterinary Solutions team should expect that they will occasionally or regularly, depending on their work assignment, be working in an exam room, surgical suite or dentistry suite that is on-view through windows to a public audience.

Handle and restrain animals of various sizes, weights, and temperaments. Subject to animal bites or scratches. Work performed in high noise level areas. Exposure to cleaning chemicals, fumes, dust, animal dander, urine and feces. Exposure to radiation in association with performing radiology procedures. Physical efforts require constant bending, stooping, standing, climbing stairs, and walking. Repetitive motion associated with medical and surgical care provision for patients. Frequent lifting of animals and objects with reasonable accommodation.

Shift Details: Full Time Staff Veterinarians work Three to Four, 10-hour shifts

Compensation: Starting at $110,000 - $120,000 annually - at Full Time 40 hours status (starting pay commensurate with market, experience, and equity)

Required
Education: Doctoral degree in veterinary medicine
Work Experience: Experience practicing veterinary medicine with owned companion animals.
Special Training, Certification or Licensure: Eligible to obtain a Colorado Veterinary License.
