The VP, Veterinary Medicine & Behavior is responsible for ensuring the highest quality of veterinary care for all clients and pets of Michigan Humane. Through strategic oversight of medical protocols and operations, the VP, Veterinary Medicine & Behavior builds and maintains an environment where our medical and behavior teams can thrive. This role partners closely with the VP, Animal Welfare to ensure efficient and cost-effective operations within our clinic and shelter.
-Work closely with the President/CEO, Board of Directors and Michigan Humane leadership to create and implement a long-term strategic plan based on MHS’ mission and vision.
-Oversee daily operations of veterinary medicine and behavior within clinics and shelters, including occasional work as a DVM.
-Participate in strategic decisions of the organization, including those that impact veterinary protocols, capabilities and resources.
-Serve as point of contact for various regulatory agencies, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations and safety/OSHA guidelines.
-Manage pipeline of veterinary talent through High School programs, Summer Jobs Program, Externs and relationship management with Veterinary Education programs (DVM & LVT); build relationships with these programs both locally and nationally. Strategize talent pipeline opportunities within the community to ensure diversity within our candidate pool.
-Cultivate leadership to medical team, encouraging teamwork, collaboration and dedication.
-Formulate medical and behavior policies, protocols and best practices that foster collaboration and accountability; incorporating quantitative measurement of results wherever possible.
-Ensure professional, prompt, effective customer service with an emphasis on empathy in client interactions.
-Establish and adhere to budgetary objectives. Provide revenue/expense oversight, financial analysis and reporting.
-Build an effective team through coaching, mentoring and staff development. Oversee CE opportunities, ensuring medical and behavioral licenses and certification are maintained.
-Provide oversight of relevant vendor relationships, as well as clinic and shelter formulary.
-Serve as a representative of Michigan Humane as a leader and subject matter expert; honor requests for public speaking and serve on national committees, providing expertise on various topics, as requested.
-Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree is required. MBA is preferred.
-Must be licensed by the State of Michigan. Must hold or be eligible to hold a State controlled substance license, a DEA license and USDA accreditation for both small and large animals.
-A minimum of 10 years of related experience with 5+ years in a leadership role.
-Proficient use of Microsoft Office and familiarity with database applications.
-Multi-location management experience preferred.
-Small and large animal experience preferred.
-Solid organizational, strategic planning and project management skills.
-Ability to set priorities, manage multiple projects and meet budgets and deadlines.
-Possess solid business acumen, including program development and management.
-Inform, educate and influence others to support veterinary center goals and objectives
-Possess exceptional written, verbal and presentation skills necessary to effectively convey goals, initiatives and program information to various audiences.
-Strong leadership skills with the ability to successfully recruit, manage and develop staff.
