Shelter Manager
Humane Society of Jefferson County 
The Humane Society of Jefferson County is seeking a compassionate, organized, and experienced Shelter Manager to lead daily animal care operations and support our mission of providing exceptional care for companion animals.
This full-time, salaried position reports to the Executive Director and oversees Animal Care staff while working closely with veterinary, adoption, volunteer, and administrative teams. The Shelter Manager is responsible for ensuring high standards of animal welfare, staff leadership, operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, and shelter best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Animal Care and Shelter Operations

Oversee daily shelter operations and animal care activities.
Ensure safe, clean, and enriching environments for all animals.
Manage animal intake, vaccinations, medications, and recordkeeping.
Maintain accurate animal health, behavioral, and medical records.
Ensure compliance with shelter safety protocols and animal handling procedures.
Develop, maintain, and implement standard operating procedures.
Maintain compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations.

Medical Coordination

Monitor animal health and behavior in collaboration with veterinary staff.
Manage inventories of medical and shelter supplies.
Coordinate external veterinary appointments and animal transportation.
Oversee weekly surgery scheduling and coordination with staff, veterinarians, fosters, and partner organizations.
Obtain and maintain euthanasia certification and perform euthanasia services as required, including maintaining related records, licenses, and controlled substances inventory.

Leadership and Staff Development

Supervise, schedule, train, coach, and evaluate Animal Care staff.
Participate in hiring, onboarding, performance management, and disciplinary processes.
Foster a positive, collaborative, and professional work environment.
Conduct staff meetings and communicate operational updates.
Collaborate with volunteer and development staff to identify volunteer needs and training opportunities.

Community and Program Support

Maintain relationships with municipalities, law enforcement agencies, veterinarians, rescue partners, and community organizations.
Stay current with industry trends and recommend operational improvements.
Manage billing related to medical services provided for partner organizations and public animals.
Coordinate with maintenance staff regarding facility and grounds needs.

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree preferred.
Minimum one year of supervisory experience required; three years preferred.
At least two years of animal shelter, veterinary, or related animal care experience preferred.
Knowledge of companion animal health and behavior.
Current euthanasia certification or willingness to obtain certification.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record and ability to drive a cargo van.
Experience with shelter management software is a plus.
