Job Description

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) is seeking On Call Adopters Welcome trainers for our Shelter Outreach & Engagement department. These positions will be responsible for conducting training programs on conversation-based adoption programs for animal shelter and animal rescue staff and volunteers. They will also assist with updating Adopters Welcome curriculum under the direction of the Director of Shelter Outreach & Engagement.

This is an on-call position and the hourly rate will be $40.

This is a non HSUS position and will be employed through a 3rd party.

You will be responsible for: 

  • Conducting training sessions covering areas such as conversation-based adoption programs, implicit and explicit bias, data collection, customer service, cultural competency, and expansion of Adopters Welcome philosophy to other shelter and rescue policies.
  • Fostering relationships with students and host organizations on behalf of the Humane Society of the United States;
  • Consulting with the Director of Shelter Outreach & Engagement on training opportunities;
  • Coordinating training schedules with the Shelter Outreach & Engagement team; will also be formulating a teaching outline and determining instructional methods including individual training, group instruction, lectures, demonstrations, and workshops;
  • Administering testing for trainees to measure progress and effectiveness of training; will be responsible for reporting on the progress of attendees during training periods.

Qualifications and Requirements: 

  • Familiarity and experience with the Adopters Welcome program;
  • Strong understanding of adult learning principles;
  • Two or more years of shelter and rescue related training experience required;
  • Experience with adoption programs, including interactions with potential and successful adopters;
  • Must have strong knowledge of cultural competency, implicit and explicit bias, and common shelter policies related to adoption;
  • Excellent verbal communication skills and experience with public speaking;
  • Must be able to and willing to travel.

This position will be based from a home office location within any state in the Continental United States with travel required.
