Job Description

SUMMARY: The Animal Care and Medical Attendant is a vital member of the MAR team that provides compassionate and attentive care of all of the animals under the shelter’s care. This position is responsible for maintaining a healthy and clean environment for our animals while also assisting the staff veterinarians and MAR Medical Team with all tasks related to veterinary care in the shelter.

Principal Duties:
Communicate exam findings and provide direct support to the veterinarian with adopted, foster, and shelter animals.
Complete thorough medical examinations while working alongside veterinarians, medical and animal care staff.
Assisting the medical team with foster and clinic appointments as needed; including managing weekly foster appointments for booster vaccinations or minor medical issues as needed.
Administering medication and treatments to shelter pets as scheduled
Read and interpret medical records to determine vaccination status and medication needs.
Performing and assisting with initial shelter exams and vaccinations of animals newly intaked or transferred into the shelter.
Examination and care of sick shelter animals including cage cleaning, exercising, feeding, observing animals for illness, following disease prevention protocols, knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission, laundry and bathing.
Assisting the veterinarian with general surgeries including but not limited to inducing and preparing patients for routine spay, neuter, dentals, and other specialty procedures as needed.
Assisting with the general maintenance and cleanliness of surgery and dispensary exam rooms; including but not limited to restocking, cleaning, and preparing materials as needed.
Assisting with euthanasia procedures as needed, including general training in the procedure and the general maintenance of euthanasia drugs under the direct supervision of MAR medical staff and the Shelter Veterinarian.
Performs daily and thorough cleaning for all animals, including feeding of residents and providing necessary enrichment to sustain their mental well being.
Janitorial duties, including but not limited to laundry, cleaning of the shelter grounds (both inside and outside), sweeping, moping, removal of trash.
Timely and accurate data entry into the shelter’s software management system for all animals; including intake processing (surrenders, strays, and transfers) and outcomes (adoptions, return to owner, transfers) as needed.
General customer service duties including but not limited to assisting prospective adopters or surrenderers over phone and scheduling appointments for visits to the shelter as appropriate within the confines of your position.
Proper handling of all fees and donations given to the Morris Animal Refuge, including but not limited to cash, debit, credit, or check transactions.
Administering vaccinations, examination, and performance of medical treatments as requested.
Must be able to lift up to forty (40) pounds and within short distances as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
High School diploma or GED and some college, trade, vocational school, college, or further education preferred
In lieu of educational credentials, applicants with equivalent work experience will be considered
Must be proficient using a computer
Knowledge of Gmail, Google Drive, Shelterluv Animal Management Software, and Microsoft Office Suite Programs is a plus
Must be knowledgeable in domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate housing, common health ailments, and disease symptoms
Experience working in animal welfare, shelters, or rescues is a plus
Experience working as a veterinary assistant or technician is a plus but not required.

QUALITIES OF THE IDEAL CANDIDATE:
Able to creatively solve problems and work cooperatively with team members
Ability to perform basic arithmetic and quickly learn drug calculations for various treatments
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Comfortable working humanely with animals of unknown disposition and those who many exhibit medical or behavioral problems
Self-motivated and passionate about animal welfare
Detail-oriented and able to work on multiple tasks simultaneously

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Shelter Manager

HOURS FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt Position
Full-time position requires a minimum of seven and a half (7.5) hours per day, thirty seven and a half (37.5) hours per week. Part-time position hours are dictated by the needs of the organization. Daily hours and days of the week (for both full and part-time positions) may vary according to the needs of the department schedule, including: days, nights, weekends, holidays, overnight, and on-call work.

SALARY AND BENEFITS: Competitive wage will be commensurate with experience, starting at $15 –17/hr
