Summary:
This position is responsible to oversee, supervise, and maintain the efficient daily operation of The Animal League Adoption Center, while ensuring that animals are well cared for both mentally and physically are of utmost importance.

Duties/Responsibilities:
• Oversee and supervise Adoptions, Animal Care/Kennel Technicians, Maintenance, Med Room staff and volunteers while at the center
• Assure that the humane philosophy and mission of the The Animal League implemented by staff and volunteers in the care of the animals and is projected to the public.
• Practices the highest standards of animal care; implements animal enrichment programs for the physical, mental and emotional care, comfort and well-being of the adoption center animals
• Assure that The Animal League brand and codes of conduct are upheld by staff, volunteers and community workers
• Ensure all Animal Care Kennel Technician’s tasks are completed on daily basis
• Create and implement employee training programs and protocols and continually monitor both for areas of improvement
• Evaluate requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for all positions to ensure that each staff member is adequately trained to perform tasks as assigned
• Effective planning, development and management of staff, including interviewing, hiring, training, scheduling, conducting, appraisals, conflict resolution and discipline up to and including termination, of adoption center staff
• Exhibits confidence in self and others; inspires and motivates others to perform well; provides a positive example for subordinate staff regarding work ethic, attitude, professional ethics, mutual respect, and knowledge of the standard operating procedures; maintain a professional working relationship with other shelter employees
• Ensure staff is fully compliant with League policies
• Oversee the smooth operation of the facility and staff including keeping all areas clean and organized
• Organize and ensure proper training and supervision of shelter volunteer base (incl. foster volunteers)
• Maintain and update Shelter SOPS
• Create weekly staff schedule
• Be able and willing to step into any position within the Shelter to cover in the event of staff shortage
• works with the Medical Manger to maintain a comprehensive disease prevention program including periodic review of sanitation procedures for the animal shelter.
• Lead and follow up on lost/found dog situations
• Reconcile specialty vet invoices and send for payment
• Monitor inventory of supplies, equipment, and materials
• Tactful and effective communication with staff, volunteers, general public, in emotional or challenging situation as well as day to day communications; responds promptly to customer requests for service and assistance
• Ensure excellent customer service is provided to the public by all staff, and that all adoptions protocols are followed
• Display consideration and courtesy to all members of the public, volunteers, coworkers, and members of the board of directors.
• Participate when requested in appropriate public relations events, tours, fundraisers, initiatives, and special programs created by the organization
• Work with Volunteer/Foster Coordinator to ensure both programs run efficiently and meet the needs of shelter operations
• Be able and willing to respond during workday, after hours, and on weekends for management assistance as needed or pet medical emergency
• Perform other duties as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:
• Adoptions Coordinator, Maintenance, Foster Coordinator, Lead ACKT, and other shelter volunteers while at the center with the animals

Reports To:
• Administrative Director

Education and Experience:
• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation
• Basic use of computer
• 2 years animal welfare experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience is required
• Knowledge of basic animal care and restraint techniques
• Ability to exercise good judgement in evaluating situations and decision making
• Ability to recognize behavioral signs in animals that indicate fear, aggressiveness, etc.
• Ability to treat team members/subordinates cordially and with respect while maintaining a professional managerial relationship.

Physical Requirements:
• Work is performed in a kennel/shelter setting and outdoors
• Frequent bending reaching, kneeling, climbing stairs, walking, and standing on feet 8-10 hours per day while performing job functions
• Ability to lift, move and/or restrain up to 50 pounds.
• Exposure to disinfectants and other chemicals including bleach
• Subject to animal bites and scratches when handling animals of questionable temperament
• Consistent exposure to animals and animal allergens under conditions with limited alterations available

Work Environment:
• Job is physically demanding and requires stamina and attention to detail
• Punctuality and good attendance are required
• Work hours may vary and may include early morning or late evening shift and weekends
• Work will be around animals that may bite, scratch, or carry disease
• Time will be spent with/around dogs and cats of all sizes and breeds
• Work will be indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions
• Work will occasionally involve cases of animal abuse or neglect and other emotionally challenging situations
• We do not tolerate negativity or drama
