This position may be filled at any of the following levels and anticipated salary ranges:
Animal Services Officer I - Grade 17 $55,648 - $68,958
Animal Services Officer II - Grade 18 $57,907 - $77,860
Animal Services Officer III - Grade 20 $62,872 - $86,964

ASOs enforce County and State laws, and completes tasks related to the care, control, and licensing of animals within Montgomery County. ASOs respond to sick and injured animals, animal rescues, stray animal calls, and various other animal related complaints. ASOs investigate citizen complaints and respond to animal emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This position collaborates with all other areas of Animal Services including Dispatch, Veterinary Services, Adoptions and Admissions.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Investigate complaints concerning public nuisance and dangerous animals.
- Investigate allegations of cruelty and neglect of animals.
- Investigate animal bites and place animals in quarantine and prepare animals for laboratory analysis.
- Coordinate call response with dispatchers ensuring that there is a complete record of each call for service.
- Communicate effectively and persuasively with the public, employees, management, government agencies, and public officials in order to explain numerous County and State ordinances, statutes, violations, and required corrective action pertaining to animal care, control, and licensing.
- Explain problems, gather information, and gains voluntary compliance to resolve complaints.
- Respond to inquiries and provide information regarding various animal related programs, i.e., feral cats, spay/neuter, rabies, vaccinations, etc.
- Handle a high volume of cases, often including stressful situations, and interact with confused, upset, insulting, and argumentative people in a calm and rational manner.
- Issue warnings, citations, apply for warrants, write statements of charges, prepare accurate and detailed written documents. All clearly done with organized thoughts, using proper grammar, to convey the appropriate ordinance, facts, and information.
- Document call responses, violations, animal bite information and animal impound clearly, concisely, and completely in the OAS computer database. Gather evidence pertinent to an investigation and provide testimony in District Court, Circuit Court, and other administrative proceedings on behalf of the County and State.
- Inspect animal related businesses such as commercial and fancier animal facilities, exotic bird facilities, and riding stables yearly.
-Capture and transport animals, both domestic and wild, to the appropriate facility safely and without harm to the ASO, staff, public, and the animals.
