Job Description

This is a full-time 40 hour a week position, with required weekend days.

THE POSITION:

We have an exciting opportunity at our Boston Animal Care and Adoption Center for an Animal Welfare Specialist. The vision of the MSPCA Animal Protection Division is to proactively address the underlying issues that put animals at risk. We value our connections to communities and organizations, and serve as a resource to protect the largest number of animals possible. Animal Welfare Specialists (AWS) are at the forefront of this mission, working directly with people and their pets to effect positive change in our community. Some job responsibilities include:

Being comfortable working hands-on with several species of animals, including companion, equine and farm animals
Being involved in all aspects of animal care including feeding, cleaning and disinfecting of animal living spaces, enrichment activities, exercising, medication administration, etc.
Meeting and greeting shelter visitors and providing meaningful customer service
Having basic knowledge of animal care and be able to share that information with shelter visitors
Working one on one to offer problem solving advice and connect people with affordable veterinary and behavior resources (e.g. low cost vaccinations, training classes, etc.)
Evaluating and examining all animals for basic medical conditions on intake as well as continual monitoring of their well-being for the duration of their stay at the shelter
Implementing behavior plans unique to each animal to ensure their success towards adoption
Effectively identify, record and discuss with care and behavior team any concerning behaviors that may arise
Participating in trainings and team discussions on behavior plans for all animals
Learning and becoming proficient in new computer software (Chameleon) for creating and updating animal records, creating receipts and searching through lost & found reports.

APPLICANT REQUIREMENTS:

We are looking for applicants with at least one year of previous work with animals and at least one year of experience in a customer service/client care position.  Previous animal shelter experience is a plus! Applicants should also demonstrate excellent judgment and interpersonal skills and are eager to work to support the human-animal bond.
