Job Description
DescriptionSummary Objective
The Animal Services Deputy Director assists in the overall management and operations of the Animal Services Department. Reporting directly to the Animal Services Director, the Deputy Director will oversee daily operations, ensuring the humane care and treatment of animals, and supporting the enforcement of local and state animal control laws, regulations and ordinances. This position involves staff supervision, program development, community outreach, and collaboration with other departments and external agencies. The Deputy Director will help implement policies and procedures, assist in the management of the department budget, and work towards the continuous improvement of animal services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.
Supervises, directs, and evaluates assigned staff, processing employee concerns and problems, directing work, counseling, disciplining, and completing employee performance appraisals.
Coordinates, assigns and reviews work and establishes work schedules; maintains standards; monitors status of work in progress; inspects completed work assignments; answers questions; gives advice and direction as needed.
Maintains and operates daily services of the Animal Services Department.
Responds to citizen complaints and calls.
Monitors enforcement of ordinances, laws, and regulations.
Keeps abreast of codes and ordinances regarding vaccinations, licenses, and leash laws.
Prepares communications with public, county department heads and officials, and veterinarians concerning disaster preparedness.
Continuous review of overall operations and make suggestions for improvements to the animal services functions.
Acts in the absence of the Animal Services Director.
Performs related work as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Requires a bachelor’s degree or education and training equivalent to four years of college education in related field.
Over four years and up to and including six years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Prefers National Animal Control Association certification.
Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
Completion of Emergency Preparedness training to include, but not limited to FEMA ISC 100, 200, 700 and 800 and others as required by department staff.
Supplemental Information
All applicants tentatively selected for a position with Beaufort County Council will be required to submit to urinalysis to screen for the illegal use of drugs and to a background check prior to appointment. Employment is contingent upon clearing both the drug screening and background investigation.
