Position Summary:
The Executive Director is responsible for all operations of Seattle Humane, providing leadership and strategic vision to the organization for successful, sustainable growth and evolution. They will oversee the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs, services, and functions that support Seattle Humane’s mission and overall fiscal health.
We seek an experienced, operationally-focused executive who has both a strong passion for animal welfare and a demonstrated track record of successful outcomes in the non-profit sector. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on, accessible, and supportive champion of Seattle Humane’s mission who leads by example, understands the business of shelter operations, and has a proven track record of successful fundraising.
The Executive Director reports structurally to a 20 person Board of Directors; their primary interaction day to day will be with the Board’s President.

Key Responsibilities:
• Serve as steward of Seattle Humane with emphasis on success through teamwork, collaboration, and thoughtful financial management.
• Develop, implement, and monitor progress against short and long term operational and financial goals aimed at supporting the mission of Seattle Humane.
• Oversee $15M annual operating budget with particular regard to revenue expansion and prudent expense management, ensuring financial stability for Seattle Humane both now and in future.
• Establish clear priorities and outcomes measurements for the Seattle Humane organization while effectively championing required investment in people, operations, and systems
• Lead by example with demonstrated analytic, organization and problem-solving skills, which support and enable sound decision-making across Seattle Humane.
• Maintain accountability for the organization’s overall operational, ethical, and fiduciary integrity, within guidelines and policies set by the Board and applicable laws and/or regulations.
• Develop and maintain an agreed performance scorecard with associated KPIs for the organization which will be shared regularly with the Board of Directors. Oversee and actively participate in measuring KPI outcomes within Seattle Humane.
• Manage a team of up to 9 Director-level reports across the organization including Operations, Veterinary Services, Advancement, Communications and Community, Finance and Human Resources.
• Actively engage with the Seattle Humane Board within scheduled meetings (typically 5 annually), Board Committee meetings (ex-officio member of all Committees) and regular 1:1 meetings with the Board President. Provide timely updates to Board regarding issues requiring their attention.
• Establish productive working relationships with current Seattle Humane stakeholders and organizations of influence, including donors, partner agencies and volunteers, Washington State University School of Veterinary Medicine, and others.
• Creatively pursue new partnerships and collaborations that will build additional revenue opportunities for Seattle Humane and positively reinforce its regional leadership position.
Knowledge / Experience Required / Education or Training:
• Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in nonprofit management, business administration or related fields, or equivalent work experience
• Minimum five (5) years of executive leadership within a non-profit organization, including experience working with the Board of Directors and Board Committees.
• Recent working understanding of companion animal care and adoption issues gained through direct employment or Board service with an animal welfare organization. Prior senior management experience within an animal welfare organization is highly desirable
• Experience overseeing capital and other fundraising campaigns with successful outcomes.
• Current understanding of compliance issues for non-profit organizations involving pertinent federal, state, and local regulations.
• Experience leading strategic and operational planning initiatives.
• Excellent verbal and written English communication skills, as well as strong public speaking skills. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with employees, donors, and volunteers.
• Strong motivational skills, management skills and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide staff and community leadership.
• Strong commitment to the professional development of staff and a successful track record of recruiting and retaining a diverse team. Ability to encourage staff to share ideas and take appropriate initiative.
