Executive Director Position Description
Position Location: Onsite at shelter, Utica NY
Reports to: Board of Directors
Hours: 40 per week, 8 - 5 or as needed
Salary: $85,000 - $105,000
Organization Mission:
To improve the lives of at-risk companion animals by means of rescue, sheltering, fostering, adoption, advocacy, collaboration, intervention, and education.
Organization Vision:
• End the needless euthanasia of companion animals and create a No Kill community.
• Rescue, rehabilitate, shelter, provide foster care and adoption for animals in immediate danger of being euthanized, abused, or abandoned.
• Public education regarding animal care, spay/neuter, and the No Kill philosophy.
Position Goals Summary:
To ensure the effective operation of the shelter and drive the organization towards its mission and vision. Responsible for the overall management and operations of the shelter, including developing and implementing policies and procedures, welfare of animals, ensuring the highest standards of animal care, managing staff, fundraising, and strategic planning.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Shelter Operations Management:
a. Support the Shelter Manager and day-to-day shelter operations, ensure the well-being, health, and safety of all animals.
b. Support the medical team, ensure proper care and treatment for all animals, ensure proper medical record keeping.
c. Develop and implement policies and procedures to follow laws and industry best practices.
d. Manage the shelter facility, including maintenance, cleanliness, and efficient use of resources and staff.
2. Staff Management and Leadership:
a. Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate staff.
b. Provide guidance, support, and professional development opportunities.
c. Foster a positive and collaborative work environment.
d. Foster teamwork and effective communication among staff.
e. Promote a culture of compassion, empathy, and dedication to animal welfare.
3. Fundraising and Financial Management:
a. Develop and implement fundraising strategies to secure financial resources for shelter
operations, programs, and capital projects.
b. Cultivate relationships with donors, sponsors, and community partners, ensuring
ongoing support and engagement.
c. Work with Board Treasurer to prepare and manage the shelter's budget, monitor
expenses, and ensure financial sustainability.
d. Work with the Board and staff to create and implement development campaigns.
4. Community Outreach and Education:
a. Develop and maintain relationships with local government entities, animal welfare
organizations, and community stakeholders to promote collaboration and advocacy for
animal welfare.
b. Promote public awareness about responsible pet ownership, spaying/neutering, animal
welfare issues, and the No Kill mission.
c. Represent the shelter in public events, media interviews, and community meetings,
acting as a spokesperson for the organization and mission.
5. Strategic Planning and Governance:
a. Collaborate with the Board of Directors to establish the organization's strategic
direction, goals, and objectives.
b. Provide regular reports and updates to the Board on the shelter's operations, financial
performance, and progress towards strategic goals.
c. Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and licensing requirements.
Qualifications and Skills:
• Bachelor's degree in nonprofit management, animal science, or a related field (preferred).
• Experience (5+ years) including staff supervision, fundraising, and community outreach.
• Knowledge of animal welfare principles, industry best practices, laws/regulations.
• Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a diverse team.
• Excellent communication, public speaking, and interpersonal skills, the ability to engage
stakeholders, build partnerships, and advocate for animal welfare.
• Passion for animal welfare and a commitment to the mission and vision of the organization.
