Job Description

Executive Director of the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Inc.
The Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society, Inc., is an open-admission, non-profit shelter serving the Middle Peninsula communities of coastal Virginia. As a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, the majority of our funding comes from fundraising efforts by volunteers, grants, bequests, and donations.

Gmhs was formed in 1912 to address community concerns regarding cruelty and abuse of animals. Primarily concentrating on livestock in the early years, Gmhs' focus shifted to advocating on behalf of "companion" animals as the area became less rural and populations grew in the 1970s, which is when the first physical shelter was built. As our mission and outreach grew to include educating our citizens on animal welfare issues and spay-neuter programs, we expanded into a state-of-the-art facility in July 2009. Enthusiastic and broad-based community support allows us to be debt-free.
Gmhs is seeking an Executive Director to lead our organization and its mission. The ideal candidate will possess proven executive-level leadership and managerial experience, preferably in non-profit organizations. Reporting directly to the Board of Directors, this role includes the comprehensive management of staff, facilities, animal care operations, P&L management, human resources, fundraising, community outreach, and marketing. The Executive Director develops and maintains organizational policies and procedures, ensures fiscal responsibility in collaboration with the Board, and leads major fundraising initiatives through donor relations, grants, and events. As the visible spokesperson for Gmhs, the Executive Director upholds and projects a positive public image within the community.
Skills and Requirements:
• Strong leadership and managerial skills aligned with Gmhs’ mission, vision, and values
• P&L management experience ideally for a budget of $2/million+
• Foster a workplace that attracts, retains, motivates and develops both staff and volunteers.
• Engage in strategic planning by identifying, creating, and implementing opportunities for improving the Society’s current methods and procedures.
• Ensure that all required records are maintained as required by law or policy as well as any necessary administrative, operations, or activity reports.
• Collaborate with the Board and management team to design and implement strategies that focus on program maintenance, growth, and financial sustainability.
• Develop and execute a comprehensive fund development plan that encompasses securing grants, fostering strong donor relationships, diversifying funding streams, engaging sponsors, and implementing targeted fundraising campaigns to ensure long-term sustainability.
• Participate in fundraising and outreach events, enhancing community engagement.
• Partner effectively with local county governments, associations, local businesses and community groups to increase local engagement and support of Gmhs.
• Passionate about saving lives of homeless pets, experience in animal welfare a plus but not required.

Required Qualifications:
• Minimum of five years’ experience in a management position, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
• Extensive experience in fundraising, marketing, public relations, and grant writing.
• Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills with meticulous attention to detail.
• Ability to communicate clearly and confidently, both verbally and in writing, and to engage effectively in group settings.
• Financial competence, including budget management.
• Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required.
