Schedule: This position is scheduled to work between 17 and 40 hours per week from June 2024 through December 2024 and is not to exceed 900 hours per calendar year. Appointee is required to work both Saturdays and Sundays while employed in this position. The allotment of 900 hours per calendar year would restart in 2025, which would reduce the number of assigned hours per week.

Responsible for the caring, feeding, and handling of animals. Assists in the medical treatment of sick and injured animals. Cleans and maintains kennels, cages, animal holding areas, and other shelter areas. Walks/exercises dogs and ensures that all adoptable dogs and manageable strays receive a minimum of four walks daily. Performs kennel inspections throughout the day to attend to the animals’ needs. Transports animals between the shelter and a vet clinic. Assists with the operation of the crematory. Receives animals and performs intake functions including data entry into a Shelter software management system, vaccinations, photographing, and identification checks on stray animals. Assists potential adopters who want to visit with a pet they are considering for adoption. Performs other tasks as assigned.
All DAS positions may be required to work shifts and/or be transferred to any DAS facility.

NOTE: This is a non-merit position. Individuals in this position are not eligible for employee benefits.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

General interest in working in an animal shelter environment.
Veterinary assistant, veterinary technician, or kennel experience.
Experience working with animals in a shelter environment or vet clinic.
Knowledge of animal behavior and animal breeds.
Computer literate.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to the positions must complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Must be able to move heavy, immobilized, or resistant animals.
Must have the ability to lift, carry, and move up to 50 pounds unassisted.
Must be able to bend, stand, stoop, walk, sit, talk, see, and hear.
Due to nature of Shelter work, may be exposed to deceased, fractious, and/or aggressive animals; zoonotic or other diseases; allergens; unpleasant noises, odors, or sights; and extreme outdoor temperatures.
Must not have allergies to animals or animal supplies (ex: hay, peanut butter, etc.) that will impede working in an animal environment.
Pre-exposure rabies vaccination required within 3 months of hire.
