Within the Denver Department of Public Health & Environment (DDPHE), Denver Animal Protection (DAP) protects the safety and welfare of Denver’s animals and residents by fostering the human animal bond. DAP emphasizes public and animal safety and health, encourages responsible pet ownership through education and enforcing compliance with animal-related municipal code requirements, and cares for animals at the Denver Animal Shelter (DAS). DAS is the Denver-metro area’s full-service open-admission animal shelter which never turns an animal away, has an Animal Protection Officer team providing 24/7 animal rescue, charges no surrender fees, and provides safe keep kennels for overnight animal drop off 365 days a year. Also, DAS is an American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA)-accredited veterinary hospital. DAS practices the Socially Conscious Sheltering model. Under direct supervision of the DAP Director, the Shelter Services Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Denver Animal Shelter, which is expected to take in over 10,000 animals this year. This includes development of policies and procedures and oversight of the following: the intake of animals; the care of animals; enrichment for animals; behavior assessment of animals; animal transfers; animal population management; staff management; facility maintenance; and ensuring compliance with regulations.
Specifically, as the Shelter Services Manager you will oversee:

Animal care: Oversee the feeding, cleaning, and enrichment for animals. Ensure animals are treated humanely and receive the necessary resources.

Staff management: Supervises two Animal Shelter Supervisors who co-lead a team of up to 14 employees performing animal care and related tasks, as well as a Behavior and Transfer Coordinator. Monitors work performance, oversees employee performance evaluations, initiates and enforces disciplinary actions, and participates in the hiring of staff. Supervises and coordinates training and staff development activities to ensure staff provide appropriate care and humane treatment to animals in accordance with departmental policies, operating standards and general work rules.

Facility operations: Develops and implements policies, procedures, and work standards. Ensure the shelter is clean and well-maintained and in compliance with PACFA regulations. Researches and remains abreast of new or improved equipment or devices for use in animal shelter facilities and makes recommendations for procurement.

Budgeting: Participates in planning and managing budget systems; prepares and presents budget recommendations to higher management; operates within budget parameters; adjusts work plans/activities because of budget changes; manages and administers contracts or agreements with outside agencies; initiates the requisitioning and procurement of supplies and equipment and approves vendor payment requests.
