Job Description
GENERAL SUMMARYThe Clinic Veterinarian, under the direction of the Clinic Medical Director, provides medical and surgical services to the animals in the shelter and the public clinic. The veterinary team works together along with Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants and Clinic Managers in a team effort to provide Best Care for all patients. In-house laboratory equipment, digital dental and full-body radiography, and dental equipment are some of the tools available. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
· Provide medical services to dogs, cats, and small mammals in the shelter including treatment of infectious disease and both acute or chronic illness, striving toward adoptions as quickly as possible.
· Perform high quality high volume spay-neuter on shelter and public patients, and other soft tissue surgeries for shelter patients.
· Oversee behavioral health of the shelter animals.
· Conduct continuing education for the clinic and Anti-Cruelty staff.
· Mentor veterinary students in their final year in shelter medicine.
· Contribute to protocols and processes as delegated by the Clinic Medical Director.
· In cooperation with the Clinic Medical Director, ensure the smooth functioning of the operation of the clinic.
· Act as a spokesperson on veterinary questions for the media as delegated by the Clinic Medical Director.
· Attend as needed Anti-Cruelty events.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Willingness to work with and learn about dogs, cats, and small mammals from a variety of backgrounds with a variety of behavior. Knowledge of treatment and containment of infectious disease a must. Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, visitors and general public.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education. Must have a current, valid Illinois veterinary license or the ability to obtain one.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
One year of previous experience as a Veterinarian is preferred but not required.
Note: A comparable combination of education, experience or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills and ability required may qualify an individual.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Ability to handle work around companion animals.
Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time.
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Available to work outside of regular work schedule, including weekends or holidays, as assigned or required.
