Job Summary

The Veterinary Services manager provides leadership and management of the Veterinary Services Support staff, ensures operational goals are created and achieved, and cultivates an environment of compassion and respect.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Manage veterinary support staff responsible for all duties related to providing shelter animal medical care, disease prevention protocol, spay/neuter surgeries, implementing treatment plans, and routing appropriate animal outcomes.
Work with a team of managers and directors to implement best practices and evaluate areas for growth through open discussion of concerns and feedback.
Partner with Lead Veterinarian & other department managers to create Standard Operation Procedures, streamline processes, and evaluate how to best meet the needs of animals in care.
Provide all beneficial training, support, and professional development opportunities for the Veterinary Services team at the Pueblo location.
Manage public events & appointments held at the shelter location related to access to veterinary care in Pueblo.
Facilitate care for animal emergency needs in close collaboration with partnering emergency pet clinics and foster department.
Ensure all controlled substances and other veterinary medications are stored and used in accordance with government regulations and established organizational protocols. Ensure proper handling of drugs and documentation management of controlled substances.
Maintain all necessary maintenance, warranties, training, and operating manuals for all equipment to include anesthesia machines, lab machines, dental machines, surgery lights, caging, microscopes, x-ray, etcetera.
Communicate with patrons advocating for animals in care regarding medical treatment plans and euthanasia decisions.
Complete approval process for humane euthanasia decisions.
Obtain certification to perform humane euthanasia, and train staff responsible for performing humane euthanasia based on best practices.
Relationships:

Work to anticipate and resolve conflict & promote open communication between volunteers, staff, and patrons. Solicit employee input regarding their work and workplace.
Deescalate situations with confrontational clients in person and over the phone.
Work closely with other HSPPR Veterinary Services Department Managers to establish and maintain consistency and continuity related to standards of care and core processes.
Communicate with outside veterinary practices related to special cases and concerns with adopted animals or public clients.
Regular and consistent communication and collaboration with other departments and locations to promote and support a team culture throughout the organization.
Fiscal Responsibility

Follow HSPPR accounting protocols related to budget monitoring and reporting, cash handling, and other financial responsibilities.
Oversee inventory of supplies and ordering for the department.
Submit department budget requests, operate within the parameters of the established budget.
Manage Veterinary Services payroll and budgets to ensure efficiency.
Performance Management and Supervision

Hire, supervise, and evaluate direct reports in the performance of their job responsibilities in a timely manner.
Coach staff by providing ongoing feedback and timely performance evaluations. Set performance standards; direct and motivate employees.
Recognize good performance and counsel staff to correct problems. Adhere to principles of progressive discipline.
Regularly evaluate department policies and procedures and update as needed.

Appropriately documents observed animal behaviors utilizing objective language as required in relevant procedures and/or policies.

Veterinary Services Supervisor, Veterinary Assistant II, Veterinary Support Associate, Registered Veterinary Technician.

Physical Demands

Regularly sits at computer station, often in a shared office environment.
The employee must regularly lift and/or move 25 or more pounds of moving weight and occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 or more pounds of moving weight.
May be occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl.
Regularly required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, and is frequently required to stand and walk. May be expected to be on feet for extended periods of time.
Consistently exposed to animals in the workplace and animal allergens under conditions with limited alternatives available.
Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision and depth perception.
Regularly exposed to noise and potential exposure to hazardous weather conditions.
Potential exposure to cleaning supplies and/or other substances containing toxic or caustic chemicals.
Schedule Requirements

Schedule may include weekend and evening work.

Education/Experience Necessary

3 years of supervisory or managerial experience or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Two years prior experience in a full-service veterinary hospital or animal shelter environment preferred.
Strong time management skills: able to prioritize and plan work activities to use time efficiently.
Organized, accurate, thorough, and able to monitor work for quality.
Prompt and dependable, able to follow instructions, work independently, respond to management direction, and able to improve performance through management feedback.
Strong computer skills and working knowledge in Microsoft Office suite of products.
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build trust and rapport at all levels of the organization.
Communicate clearly, both written and verbally, with staff and in group presentations and meetings.
