Job Description

Veterinary Technician

Works under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian or contractor employed by the Houston SPCA.
Assist Veterinary Services Coordinator(s) and/or Veterinary Services management in ensuring routine examinations and treatments of animals in the care of the Houston SPCA are properly performed as required.
Provide assistance to Veterinarians when necessary.
Monitor the Houston SPCA care of animals and report any discrepancies to the Veterinary Services Coordinator.
Assist staff with initial customer questions and/or issues in a timely manner.
Ensure animals are properly cared for, monitored, medicated and treated as needed.
Ensure assigned areas are cleaned on a daily basis.
Responsible for vaccinating animals.
Draw blood and perform diagnostic testing including, but not limited to heartworm testing, fecal testing, skin scraping, FIV and FIV testing.
Ensure that injured animals receive proper and timely treatment.
Work with x-ray and blood equipment.
Prepare animals, instruments and equipment for surgical procedures.
Collect specimens and perform laboratory procedures.
Maintain database by entering accurate information on the animals in our care.
Ensure proper labeling and dating of medications, maintains accurate inventory of all medications in stock and replenishes stock as necessary, and report discrepancies to the veterinary services manager
Update Veterinary Services Manager on areas of interest and/or concern.
Requirements
Knowledge, skill and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:

Licensed Veterinary Technician preferred.
Maintain Continuing Education requirements of credentialing.
Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions, and animal handling and behavior.
Ability to handle animals safely, with patience and gentleness.
Represent the Houston SPCA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.
Represent to create and sustain positive working relationships within the Houston SPCA, with volunteers and the public and be a team player.
Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions.
Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and electronic form.
Ability to read, write and communicate effectively.
Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.
High school diploma or equivalent with three years of working experience.
Valid Texas Driver’s License and a good driving record is optimum.
Ability to work unscheduled hours.
Must be able to safely lift 50lb, carry, and push and pull heavy objects, with or without assistance.
