The Adoption Center Manager has overall responsibility for the daily operation and welfare of the adoption center as it relates to the performance of all direct animal care staff (veterinary, adoption, kennel, cattery, canine obedience and volunteer staff) and public relations with visitors who come to the adoption center. The Manager position is a hands-on position and is expected to actively participate in the adoption of cats and dogs to the public. This position is Exempt and includes Annual and Sick Leave.
Essential Functions
1. Actively participates in the adoption of cats and dogs to the public.
2. Engages in open and informative communications with the Executive Officer and the interstate Rescue Coordinator—and responds to board member inquiries as requested.
3. Responsible for the direct management and performance of the adoption and animal care staff—with a special emphasis on promoting the adoption of animals.
4. Monitors and evaluates the performance of the animal care staff.
5. Seeks out and conducts off-site adoption efforts.
6. Ensures the daily care of animals in accordance with defined Standards of Humane Care.
7. Implements animal enrichment programs for the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the adoption center animals; in conjunction with the staff veterinarian maintains a comprehensive disease prevention program for the adoption center.
8. Responsible for the intake of cats and dogs locally and for coordinating the intake of other animals, primarily dogs, with the Interstate Rescue Coordinator.
9. Serves as the point of contact for after-hour emergencies involving animals; coordinates the transport of such animals to emergency veterinary hospitals and serves as the decision maker in discussions with emergency veterinarians.
10. Nurture, organize, schedule and maintain effective volunteer base.
11. Effective planning, development of supervisory staff, including interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, conducting annual performance appraisals, engaging in conflict resolution and conducting performance counseling up to and including terminations.
12. Tactful and effective communication with staff, volunteers, and general public in emotional and/or challenging situations.
13. Other duties as required.
Working Conditions: Adoption Center environment and off-site adoption events, constant exposure to cats and dogs, and interactions with the public.
Qualifications: Minimum 5 years’ management experience working in the nonprofit animal welfare field; specifically related to the adoption of cats and dogs required. Must have expert knowledge of companion animal behavior as well as excellent oral and written communication skills. Bachelor’s Degree preferred; Associates Degree accepted. Must hold a valid driver’s license and satisfactory driving record. Must be able to lift and carry a minimum of 50 lbs. for short distances.
