Job Description
General DescriptionPerforms supervisory work in the field of animal care and regulation and in the operation of kennel facilities.
Works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Requires two (2) years in the professional care and control of animals in the field, a kennel or shelter facility and one (1) additional year of supervisory or leader worker experience.
Special Certifications and Licenses
Must possess a valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment, and must obtain and maintain the authority to drive on County business.
Applicants must also have the following professional trainings/certifications from Florida Animal Protection and Advocacy Association (FAPAA) or National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) or be able to obtain them within 6 months of hire if certified in a different state:
-Animal Control Officer Certification
-Euthanasia Certification
Preferences
Animal Cruelty Investigator Certification
One year's experience working with Chameleon
Chemical Immobilization Certification
Duties and Responsibilities
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the job as necessary.
-Supervises/coordinates enforcement section activities of animal care operations which may include; coordination with admissions, clinic, customer service, and alternative placement.
-Coordinates special assignments for subordinates such as Dangerous Dog Investigations, Bite Investigations.
-Coordinates training programs/training schedules for subordinates.
-Monitors/audits field call responses by Animal Care Specialists - Field for quality assurance, consistency, and training opportunities.
-Supervises/coordinates bite reporting, specimen preparation and testing, Dangerous Dog appeal hearings, etc.
-Supervises/coordinates activities of the bite reporting customer service representative and all functions of that office.
-Coordinates large scale animal cases for intake due to confiscation and/or resolution of animal welfare issues. Including incumbent providing field response supervision and coordination as necessary.
-Reviews subordinate work for procedural/administrative errors. Ensures accuracy of records entered. Coaches, mentors and initiates disciplinary action as required for subordinate staff. Creates schedules and prepares performance evaluations for subordinates.
-Explains policies and procedures to staff and public. Develops, recommends, and writes standard operating and internal procedures; helps to improve current policies and procedures; develops, recommends, and implements approved animal programs according to established best practices.
-Participates in activities to implement and monitor required agency emergency support functions; reports to assigned facility and staging areas for pre- and post-emergency operations coverage.
-Serves as Division liaison with Broward County agencies, various support agencies and local law enforcement; represents the section at community events relating to animal issues and conducts meetings and workshops with animal welfare groups and interested citizens.
-Monitors animal health and welfare; reviews animal's behavior to determine disposition; recommends animals for adoption, transfer or euthanasia; monitors the animals' health and living standards.
-Performs related work as assigned.
*This position will require working weekends.
The starting salary for this position is $27.21 per hour
