Animal Care Team Member – Humane Society of Vero Beach & Indian River County

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Shelter Manager, the Kennel Assistant is responsible for maintaining proper disease control protocols, including cleaning of kennels, cages and surrounding areas.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Perform daily cleaning of kennels, cages and public areas, following proper disease control protocol to ensure a sterile environment.
Stock all kennels and cleaning supplies as needed.
Clean all animal areas outside of the rooms including but not limited to hallways, kitchen areas, inventory areas, outside kennel areas and special rooms.
Spot clean kennels and public areas throughout the day.
Work cooperatively with HSVB’s staff, volunteers and partners.
Always represent HSVB in a professional and courteous manner.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Preferred High School Diploma or GED.
Minimum of 16 years of age.
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills with the ability to multi-task.
Ability to interact with animals in a calm, non-threatening manner.
Ability to work effectively, both independently and in team environment.
Ability to positively interact with colleagues, coworkers, and community members from widely varied backgrounds with integrity and honesty throughout all facets of the position, maintaining confidentiality at all times.
Reliability, high level of integrity and punctuality are essential.
Good communication skills and ability to work in a team environment and follow directions.
Ability to work weekends, holidays and special events.
Passion for HSVB’s mission, and for caring for all animals regardless of age, breed, temperament, or species, and supporting and educating members of the public, free of judgment or bias.
Must be able to work under efficiently and effectively with multiple departments.
Ability to work independently and as part of team.
Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help.
Ability to make decisions.
Ability to cope with frustrating situations and remain calm.

Physical Requirements and Work Environment:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time, as well as move and traverse within the shelter facility for extended periods of time, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to communicate, converse with, convey information to, express oneself, and exchange information with shelter staff and the general public.
