Job Description
Essential Function:Field Operations consists of Animal Services Officers working outside the shelter, patrolling areas of the county and responding to dispatched calls. Although Officers have basic job responsibilities, in addition to their primary duties, Animal Services Officers shall be required to assist with shelter duties when necessary or requested.
Primary Duties
• Responds to citizen calls for service regarding strays, animal bites, possible rabies exposure, and cases of animal cruelty and neglect.
• Investigates cases of suspected animal cruelty, neglect, and abandonment, and completes necessary paperwork for filing of criminal charges when appropriate, in a timely manner.
• Ensure accurate completion of all required paperwork legibly, completely, and in a timely manner.
• Routinely patrols various areas of the county maintaining an observation for stray and dangerous animals as well as compliance with state laws and county ordinances.
• Enforces state laws and county ordinances through written warnings and citations when appropriate.
• Utilizes field microchip scanners to determine if a stray or deceased animal has a microchip and attempts to notify the owner prior to impoundment or other disposition.
• Removes deceased domesticated animals and large animals from roadways, with disposition as appropriate.
• Respond to after hour emergency calls: aggressive animals, loose livestock, bite calls
• Performs euthanasia as necessary, prepares and ships samples for rabies testing.
• Utilizes radio and computer dispatch systems to receive and respond to calls for service and ensure entries are made in regard to circumstances and actions taken.
• Utilizes Animal Shelter software to inquire, update, and enter identifying animal information.
• Assist with cleaning and sanitize the shelter kennels, cages, and dishes and laundry
On-Call Status
Animal Services Officers shall be assigned on-call status on a rotating basis for response to emergency calls for service. During their scheduled on-call status, the Officer MUST:
• Be available for response to emergency calls.
• Be able to maintain a maximum 1-hour response time.
• Be in uniform when responding to calls for service.
Animal Services Officers will respond after hours for the following situations:
• injured animals
• aggressive animals
• loose livestock
• animal bites to a human
During the Officer’s on-call period, the Officer will maintain the log of after-hours call received and responded to. This log will contain the call for service number, time received, type of call, time arrived at the call, action taken, and time cleared from the call. This log will be turned in to the Director at the end of the Officer’s on-call period.
