Overview
The Controller is responsible for overseeing, planning, and directing all aspects of the organization's accounting functions. This role manages the accumulation and consolidation of financial data to ensure accurate and timely reporting of HSSV’s financial results. With a proactive and collaborative mindset, the Controller anticipates organizational and project needs, contributing strategically to overall financial planning. This individual provides leadership and guidance to the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
Duties and Responsibilities
Leadership
Manage a high performing team and spreadhead team building, employee relations, communications, performance management, and goal setting.
Lead the payroll, accounts payable, and general accounting functions.
Manage sensitive and confidential financial information with the highest level of integrity and discretion, ensuring compliance with organizational policies and legal requirements related to data privacy and financial reporting.
Partner with department managers for interpretation of financial data to assist in decisions on the financial health of the organization.
Partner with VP, Finance in navigating HSSV towards achievement of the organization’s strategic financial initiatives.
Drive process improvements and leverage technology whenever possible while ensuring a high level of security around financial control systems.
Establish financial policies, procedures, controls, and reporting systems.
Financial Statements
Oversee accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems ensuring compliance with GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
Develop and maintain processes to ensure data integrity and accuracy.
Drive process for timely and accurate reconciliations of accounts to ensure timely month close.
Produce internal and external financial reports as required for department leaders, Board of Directors, and audit meetings.
Manage audit and tax preparation and interface with external auditors for audit and tax compliance.
Budget Management
Assist the VP, Finance with preparation and management of the budget on an annual basis and during the year, as needed.
Collaborate with departments on budget management and ensure budget to actual reports are available to budget owners on a timely basis.
Train and mentor the Revenue team on budget management and partnering with department managers.
Achieve budget objectives by scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective actions.
Other Areas
Ensure compliance with current legal and regulatory requirements by staying up to date on federal, state, and local legislation; applying changes directly to HSSV’s financial practices; - enforcing adherence to requirements; preparing and filing required financial reports; and advising management on necessary actions.
Ensure financial information is kept confidential; shared only with those authorized to receive the information.
Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
Other job duties may be assigned as needed.
Requirements
Successful people and financial/accounting management experience working in a highly collaborative environment with cross-functional management teams; nonprofit experience a plus.
Experience with annual audits and IRS Form 990 preparation (for nonprofit roles) a plus.
CPA license highly preferred.
In-depth understanding of internal controls, audit procedures, and compliance with federal, state, and local laws.
Ability to operate at a strategic and operational level with a demonstrated ability to drive results and assess financial trends and support strategic decision-making.
Excellent organizational skills including a high degree of attention to detail and accuracy in working with accounting and finance data.
Ability to handle confidential information with discretion, professionalism, and sound judgment.
Excellent problem-solving, process improvement, and decision-making abilities.
Ability to quickly adapt, be self-motivated, and adjust to the changing needs of the organization.
Outstanding interpersonal and relationship building skills (with diverse internal and external audiences), including excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to leverage technology to drive process enhancements.
Advance Microsoft Office skills, especially Excel and experience with data analysis. Deep understanding of financial and accounting software systems; NetSuite and Concur a plus.
Work Days and Hours
This position is Monday – Friday; onsite only.
