Experience:
● Must have 5+ years of experience in a managerial position that includes:
1. Proven experience in managing a team.
2. Creation and execution of marketing and fundraising campaigns.
3. Partnership development with industry professionals and leaders.
4. Community outreach experience including social media development.
5. Budget management and resource leveraging.
● Must have 3+ years of animal welfare management experience that includes:
1. Working in a shelter, rescue, vet clinic, or other animal husbandry position. Preferably in a leadership role.
2. Hands on knowledge of basic medical, handling, and documentation practices.
3. Making quality of life, behavioral and other treatment decisions.
● Non-profit experience is ideal, but not required.
● Vet-tech experience is ideal, but not required.
● Grant writing experience is ideal, but not required.

Summary: The Director of the Animal Shelter is responsible for the management, operations, and overall success of the shelter. This role involves overseeing the day-to-day activities, ensuring the humane treatment and care of animals, managing staff and volunteers, and leading community outreach and fundraising efforts. The Director will also develop and implement policies and programs that align with the organization's mission to promote animal welfare.

The Shelter Director must possess the ability to inspire and lead a diverse team of staff and volunteers. The Director must have a passion for people as well as animals, the ability to remain calm in highly stressful situations, possess strong conflict management and interpersonal skills. In addition, excellent communication skills with the ability to engage with the public and media in a professional manor are required.

Responsibilities:
Leadership & Management:
● Oversee the daily operations of the shelter, including animal care, admissions, and adoptions.
● Ensure the shelter meets all local, state, and federal regulations regarding animal care.
● Develop and implement policies and procedures to ensure a safe and humane environment.
● Engage with industry experts and attend national shelter conferences to learn and implement the best practices within the industry.
● Manage budgets, financial planning, and reporting; ensure cost-effective operations.
Animal Care:
● Ensure all animals receive proper medical care, nutrition, and enrichment as provided by the Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.
● Monitor the health and behavior of animals, ensuring they are treated with compassion and dignity.
● Ensure the total population stays at a manageable number:
■ Develop programs to increase animal adoption rates.
■ Develop programs to increase the return to owner rate.
■ Develop new relationships to increase the transfer rate.
■ Making and executing quality of life decisions.
Community Engagement & Fundraising:
● Serve as the public face of the shelter, building relationships with donors, volunteers, and community partners.
● Plan and execute fundraising events and campaigns to support the shelter's operations.
● Develop outreach programs to educate the community about responsible pet ownership, spaying/neutering, and animal welfare.
● Collaborate with animal control, law enforcement and local officials to promote animal welfare and ensure that the shelter is providing the highest level of service possible.
● Maintain and further develop the low cost spay neuter program.
● Secure grants for equipment, programs and services.
Strategic Planning:
● Develop and implement a long-term strategic plan for the shelter.
● Identify opportunities for growth, expansion of services, and improvement in operations.
● Prepare reports and presentations for the Shelter Board of Directors, City Board of Alderman and County Board of Supervisors providing updates on shelter activities, challenges, and successes.
