Job Description

Summary: The Director of the Animal Shelter provides overall strategic leadership, operational oversight, fundraising and revenue generating activities. This role combines visionary leadership with hands on management, balancing long-term strategy with the daily realities of animal care, staff development, and community relations.

Responsibilities

Leadership & Strategic Planning
● Collaborate with the Board of Directors to develop and execute the organization’s vision, mission and goals.
● Identify opportunities for growth and develop pathways for achieving success.
● Build relationships with local government, rescue partners, industry leaders, and community partners.
● Cultivate a collective mindset of continuous improvement, education and transparency amongst staff, volunteers and board members.
● Serve as the primary ambassador of the shelter and engage the public with integrity, empathy, and professionalism.


Operations Management
● Oversee all daily shelter operations ensuring high quality animal care, employee performance and customer service.
● Ensure the humane care, enrichment, and medical treatment of all animals in the shelter’s care.
● Develop and implement operational policies, procedures, and systems that promote efficiency and compliance.
● Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal laws while meeting specific animal welfare standards.

Human Resources
● Foster a culture of compassion, respect, and transparency.
● Recruit, train, and retain a high-performing team of staff and volunteers.
● Facilitate communication and teamwork among staff, volunteers, and the Board.
● Provide ongoing mentorship, evaluations, and recognition to support morale and foster individual accountability.
● Ensure compliance with all state and federal employment laws and shelter policies.
Financial Management
● Work with the Board Finance Committee to create and manage the annual budget.
● Assist the Treasurer in monitoring expenses, revenues, and fundraising results; provide accurate, timely financial reports to the Board.
● Exercise fiscal responsibility and ensure long-term financial sustainability.

Fundraising
● Expand fundraising initiatives to diversify revenue.
● Oversee the planning and execution of fundraising events, campaigns, and community partnerships.
● Cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors, corporate sponsors, foundations, and grant-makers.

Qualifications:
● Minimum 3 years of leadership experience in animal welfare or a related field.
● Proven ability to lead teams, build positive work culture, and foster collaboration.
● Strong operational, strategic, and financial management skills.
● Exceptional communication and public speaking abilities.
● Demonstrated success in fundraising and donor relations.
● Strong knowledge of animal care standards, welfare regulations, and shelter best practices.
