Job Description

The Director of Capacity & Outcomes is responsible for strategic leadership and direction to ensure efficient and smooth shelter operations and program oversight, including Adoptions, Foster, Behavior & Enrichment, and Community Support Services. Drives continuous improvement through proper onboarding, training, and professional development, with a strong focus on the mission, vision, and best practices. In addition, manages structure and staff, developing systems and processes that maximize department and organizational effectiveness. This is a fast-paced, high-competency position which will include some Saturday availability/flexible scheduling.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Plan, organize, and oversee all operations of assigned departments to ensure they meet the goals and
objectives of the SPCA.
• Work closely with managers to manage capacity, shorten length of stay, increase pet retention, and ensure the most humane outcomes for the animals.
• Lead staff discussions regarding placement decisions, behavior plans, and other animal-related concerns,
including involvement in euthanasia decisions.
• Identify and develop external collaborations and partnerships to improve program outcomes.
• Assist with any customer service concerns and make sure the staff is communicating accurately and
practicing good customer service protocols.
• Ensure all managers and their staff are properly trained in their area and ensure they can and have what
they need to perform their responsibilities.
• Lead monthly reporting for shelter activities and programs. Maintain monthly and yearly statistics for all
operational departments.
• Coordinate/lead transports from other shelters including involvement in large-scale disaster relief efforts.
• In conjunction with department managers, coordinate adoption events and represent the organization in
external partnerships.
• Develop and maintain positive communications and relationships with local, regional, and national
partners, including coordination of all mutual assistance group meetings.
• Ensure minimum required standards are met as set in place by the NYS Companion Animal Standards Act
as well as the Association of Shelter Veterinarians Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters.
• In conjunction with department managers, write, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures.
• Periodically review and assess policies, processes, programs, and work – particularly considering
developments in the animal welfare field – within the organization to make needed changes to meet the
needs of the animals and the community. Use project management when necessary. Provide reports and
analysis of data regularly as requested by the Senior Leadership Team.
• Work with department managers to ensure a smooth rollout of any changes to procedures, processes, or
policies to indirect reports. Ensure that all established procedures and policies of the organization are
reliably and consistently implemented.
• Act as a driving force of change, growth, and assistance in maintaining a healthy organizational culture.
• Actively participate as a member of the leadership team, attending applicable meetings and participating in strategic and annual planning for the organization.
• Commit to professional development through life-long learning and maintain networks within the field.
• Ensure proper staff coverage in operations departments.
• Foster a safe and inclusive environment for individuals to ask questions, learn, and grow.
• Foster accountability within the operations departments to ensure that all employees meet or exceed the
expectations of the SPCA mission and values.
• Provide counsel in recommending appropriate courses of action regarding employee relation issues.
• Lead collaboration between the operations teams with development/communications departments and
participate in events for fundraising, community outreach, and adoptions.
• Ensure that appropriate records (people, animal, & facility-related) are accurately created, maintained, and reported in accordance with state and federal laws.
• In conjunction with department managers, create, oversee, and manage department budgets, revenue
generation, and expense management.
• Participate in creating a thriving culture of philanthropy at the SPCA Serving Erie County by increasing
awareness and support of our organization. This is achieved by being knowledgeable and supportive of
SPCA programs and events, sharing your passion for service to animals and people within our community,
and serving as an inspiration by providing an exemplary level of animal care and guest service.
