Director of Community Engagement
Location: Phoenix, AZ (near 40th St. & Washington)
Salary: $90,800 (negotiable) + full benefits

The Arizona Animal Welfare League (AAWL) is Arizona’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, serving the community for over 50 years. We’re dedicated to keeping pets and families together through affordable veterinary care, pet resources, and lifesaving rescue and adoption services. The Role
We’re looking for a collaborative, empathetic leader to manage community programs in four key areas:

• Volunteers
• Events
• Shelter Intervention & Diversion
• Access to Veterinary Care

You’ll lead a team of seven, oversee partnerships (including Arizona Pet Project), and work across departments to ensure programs meet community needs and align with AAWL’s mission. This role is strategic and hands-on—designing, implementing, and improving programs that keep pets with the people who love them.

What You’ll Do
• Lead and mentor a 7-person team
• Strengthen volunteer recruitment and engagement
• Oversee shelter diversion and safety-net programs
• Expand access to veterinary care for underserved communities
• Collaborate with internal teams and external partners
• Manage budgets, grants, and community events

What We’re Looking For
• 5+ years nonprofit or related experience, 3+ years in leadership
• Strong relationship-building and program development skills
• Strategic thinker with experience managing budgets and grants
• Excellent communication skills (English & Spanish required)
• Passion for animal welfare and community impact
