Job Description
Position Overview:The Shelter Director is responsible for the overall leadership, management, and strategic direction of a rural animal shelter dedicated to the rescue, care, and rehoming of animals. This individual will ensure the shelter operates efficiently, compassionately, and in compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations. As the face of the organization, the Director also plays a key role in collaboration with veterinary partners and volunteers.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Operations
Oversee day-to-day operations, ensuring the health and welfare of all animals in care.
Implement and enforce policies and procedures set down by the board.
Uphold protocols for animal care, intake, adoption, and public interaction and update as need arises.
Supervise, train, and evaluate shelter staff and volunteers, promoting a positive and mission-aligned work environment.
Ensure compliance with animal welfare laws, safety regulations, and shelter standards.
Strategic Planning & Program Development
Collaborate with the board to establish long-term goals and strategies.
Identify opportunities for program growth, including spay/neuter initiatives, educational programs, and community outreach.
Finance & Fundraising
Identify and pursue funding opportunities including grants, donor programs, and fundraising events.
Maintain accurate records and financial reporting for transparency and accountability.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
Serve as the primary spokesperson and advocate for the shelter in the community.
Build partnerships with local veterinarians, rescue organizations, and civic groups.
Represent the shelter at public events, speaking engagements, and within local government forums.
Qualifications:
3-5 years shelter experience or equivalent experience/education in animal welfare, nonprofit or related experience.
Strong knowledge of animal care practices, shelter management, and humane euthanasia protocols
Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and emergencies.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in rural community engagement and resource-limited environments.
Grant writing and fundraising experience.
Certification in Animal Shelter Management, Nonprofit Leadership, or similar.
Work Environment:
This position involves direct work with animals and exposure to cleaning products, loud noises, and emotionally challenging situations. The Shelter Director must be capable of lifting 30+ pounds and handling a variety of animals under stress or in need.
Salary & Benefits:
$45,000–$48,000, based on experience
Vacation and sick time.
