About Vets in Vans
Vets In Vans is a dynamic nonprofit mobile veterinary clinic providing high-quality, affordable, and compassionate care to underserved communities across the Bay Area. We bring urgent care, preventative services, dental care, surgeries, and humane euthanasia directly to where they’re needed most—removing barriers and preserving the human-animal bond.
We’re seeking a visionary Executive Director to lead us into our next chapter of growth, deepening our impact, expanding services, and strengthening our sustainability.
Position Summary
The Executive Director is the chief executive of Vets in Vans, responsible for leading the organization’s strategy, fundraising, operations, and financial health. This role is ideal for a mission-driven leader who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced environment and brings both heart and hustle to everything they do.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Organizational Management
• Collaborate with the Board, Medical Director, and senior team to shape and drive strategic initiatives.
• Lead the development and implementation of systems and policies that foster operational excellence and healthy growth.
• Promote a culture of accountability, transparency, and innovation.
• Serve as the organization’s public face and internal anchor—visible, supportive, and decisive.
Financial & Operational Oversight
• Develop and manage the annual budget in partnership with the Board, Medical Director and finance team.
• Oversee financial operations, ensuring compliance, clarity, and strong internal controls, including cash handling procedures, accounts payable and receivable, and expense tracking.
• Maintain oversight of accountants and auditors, grant budgets, and funding allocation.
• Analyze financial performance and adjust strategies to ensure sustainability and efficiency.
Fundraising & Development
• Lead a diverse fundraising strategy encompassing grants, donor cultivation, major gifts, sponsorships, and events.
• Deepen relationships with funders and stakeholders while growing our supporter base.
• Guide marketing and communications to elevate the brand and engage the public.
• Support the Board in leveraging networks and partnerships to grow revenue.
Human Resources & Team Development
• Foster a healthy, inclusive, and mission-aligned workplace culture.
• Ensure compliance with employment law and best practices.
• Support hiring, onboarding, performance reviews, and professional development.
• Serve as mentor and manager to senior staff, building cohesion and leadership capacity.
Community Engagement & Program Expansion
• Cultivate relationships with local governments, shelters, rescue groups, and community partners.
• Lead thoughtful, equitable growth of mobile services and partnerships.
• Ensure that all services reflect our values and commitment to accessible, ethical care.
Events & Communications
• Oversee community outreach, volunteer programs, and public-facing events.
• Ensure cohesive messaging across all platforms, including website, newsletters, and social media.
• Represent Vets in Vans at key public events and conferences.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required; graduate degree preferred.
• 5–8 years of leadership experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organization, ideally with operational and fundraising responsibilities.
• Demonstrated success in fundraising, including major gifts and grant writing.
• Skilled in budget management, HR oversight, strategic thinking, problem-solving and team leadership.
• Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
• Flexible, detail-oriented, and self-motivated with a positive, collaborative attitude.
• Strong connection to animal welfare and social justice principles.

Additional Details
• Location: Bay Area preferred (some flexibility for hybrid/remote arrangements).
• Compensation: Competitive salary commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, PTO, and professional development support.
