Located in Oskaloosa, Iowa, Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter is a no-kill shelter that has been serving the community for nearly 50 years. Each year, we care for 300–400 animals, providing shelter, medical care, and adoption services. Our mission is to end pet homelessness, serve as a trusted community resource for pets and people, and enhance the welfare of all companion animals. We are dedicated to compassionate care, responsible pet ownership, and building a stronger bond between animals and the community.

Role Description
The Director will need to be open to challenges and opportunity while working in a modern, well-regarded facility within a small community. The Shelter Director provides strategic leadership, operational oversight, and community stewardship for Stephen Memorial Animal Shelter. This role is responsible for advancing the shelters mission to end pet homelessness and serves as a community resource for pets, people, while enhancing the welfare of all companion animals. They maintain a positive public image and assure constancy to local, state and federal regulations and assure the highest standards of sheltering practices.
The Director supports the financial sustainability through planning, communication, and oversight of fundraising, grant writing, and volunteer programs. The Director is the primary liaison with the Shelter Board of Directors as well as local government officials.
This role requires a visionary and collaborative leader who cares about animals, can inspire a team, and serve the needs of the Mahaska Community.

Qualifications
• Leadership and management skills, including staff and volunteer coordination
• Experience in budgeting, financial management, and fundraising
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, suitable for community outreach and engagement
• Knowledge of animal care standards, shelter operations, and applicable regulations
• Strategic planning and problem-solving abilities
• Ability to work on-site and manage a dynamic environment
• Experience in a non-profit organization is a plus
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field is preferred
