Executive Director – Allegany County Animal Shelter
Location: Cumberland, MD | Full-Time | Salary Commensurate with Experience
Are you a compassionate leader with a passion for animal welfare and nonprofit management? The Allegany County Animal Shelter is seeking an experienced and mission-driven Executive Director to lead our organization in providing exceptional care for animals and impactful service to our community.
As Executive Director, you will report directly to the Allegany County Animal Shelter Management Foundation Board of Directors and oversee the daily operations of the Shelter, shaping programs and strategies that fulfill our mission. You’ll be the face of the organization—building relationships with donors, government agencies, community leaders, and volunteers—while ensuring compliance with animal welfare regulations and managing financial operations, staffing, and facilities.
This is a pivotal role for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment and is ready to lead a dedicated team making a difference in the lives of animals every day.

Key Responsibilities
• Provide visionary leadership and working with the Animal Shelter Manager, manage daily operations of the Shelter and Animal Control Operations.
• Supervise and support staff, ensuring a high standard of care for all animals
• Oversee shelter compliance with local, state, and federal laws and guidelines
• Manage budgets, financial reporting, and funding initiatives
• Write and administer grants to support shelter operations
• Serve as a public advocate for the shelter in the community, through outreach, partnerships, and fundraising
• Collaborate closely with the Foundation Board of Directors to implement strategic goals and establish strategic initiatives.

What We’re Looking For
• Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent work experience)
• 3–5 years of experience working with animals
• 5 years of management and supervisory experience
• Strong communication and leadership skills
• Knowledge of animal care standards and regulatory guidelines
• Budgeting and grant writing experience
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
• Passion for community service and ability to work with a diverse populations


Additional Information
This is an essential role that may require availability on weekends, holidays, and during emergencies.
