HSSC is seeking an Experienced Surgical & Triage Technician to join our Veterinary Services Team and play a pivotal role in lifesaving care for animals in need. This is a senior-level position for seasoned technicians with deep experience in veterinary surgery, anesthesia, and critical care triage. Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership, clinical proficiency, and the ability to thrive in high-pressure settings.

The Humane Society of Sarasota (HSSC) operates a no-kill animal shelter located in Sarasota, FL. We provide compassionate care for 3,000 cats and dogs annually and an additional 2,000 cats through our community cat program. What You'll Do:
As a key member of the Veterinary Services Department, you’ll take the lead in advanced surgical and emergency care operations. Responsibilities include:
- Inducing and monitoring anesthesia for complex surgical procedures, including emergency stabilization.
- Leading triage efforts during critical patient intake and urgent situations.
- Performing and interpreting advanced diagnostics (e.g., EKGs, cystocentesis, full-mouth dental radiographs).
- Scrubbing in on advanced surgeries, maintaining sterile techniques, and using equipment like cautery and suction systems.
- Managing crash carts and executing CPR protocols when a veterinarian is unavailable.
- Training and mentoring junior technicians and assistants, ensuring adherence to best practices in shelter medicine.
- Educating fosters, adopters, and the public on post-op and ongoing care for animals.
- Participating in operational planning and process improvement within the department.
What We’re Looking For:
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in surgery, emergency triage, and diagnostics, ideally in a shelter or high-volume setting.
- CVT/LVT preferred but not required.
- Strong leadership and mentoring capabilities.
- Proficiency in ShelterLuv and veterinary diagnostic equipment.
- CPR and euthanasia certification (or willingness to obtain within 6 months).
- Fear Free Certification (or willingness to obtain within 60 days).
- Exceptional animal handling skills—including fractious and medically fragile animals.

Physical Requirements
- Frequently stand, walk, bend, stoop, and crouch throughout the day
- Lift and carry animals and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds
- Perform repetitive tasks, such as cleaning kennels and feeding animals
- Work in varying temperatures, including outdoor conditions in all seasons
- React quickly and calmly in stressful or emergency situations
- Safely handle animals of varying sizes and temperaments
