Job Description
Position Summary: The Lifesaving programs supervisor is a mid-level managerial position who assists the shelter manager in the daily supervision and oversight of coordinators or specialists in the lifesaving programs department. S/he provides oversight to create a positive and supportive environment for the public and staff in a way that reflects the values and mission of the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL). This is a multi-faceted role that encompasses multiple lifesaving areas including foster, transport, and off-site adoptions. The lifesaving programs supervisor is responsible for communicating with the public and growing the foster program, partnering with local, regional, and breed-specific or need-specific rescue groups to coordinate transfer of pets, and leading utilization of the ARL mobile unit and off-site adoption events within the community. The lifesaving programs supervisor performs the same duties as the coordinators and specialists within their department, but with the added responsibility of day-to-day leadership and direction to ensure the daily operations of the department run smoothly. This position includes administrative duties, supervisory, client services, and physical labor duties.Supervisor: Shelter Manager

These duties include, but are not limited to:
-Providing needed information for stories and promotions.
-Ensuring the needs of the animals and public are met whenever possible.
-Assisting with events or fundraising as needed.
Examples of Duties and Responsibilities:
Operational Duties
Strategize how to expand lifesaving efforts.
Help create innovative programs and promotions to expand lifesaving efforts.
Partner closely with other departments to achieve lifesaving goals.
Oversee orientation and training process for foster volunteers via Lifesaving Programs Specialists.
Serve as a point of contact for foster volunteers. This includes fielding after-hours calls on designated days.
Oversee 24/7 emergency contact plan for foster families.
Strategizes growth of foster network for Emergency Boarding placement requests
Work with dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, pregnant and nursing animals, small animals, and farm animals using fear free methods.
Manage the foster volunteer database and complete monthly data reporting from Shelter Buddy and Better Impact.
Responsible for overseeing Pawsitive Partners program including meeting an annual growth goal.
Enhance and expand relationships with rescue and shelter partners with a focus on networking to send animals from ARL to partners.
Assist with pathway plans for animals with a goal of placement in less than 48 hours.
Ensure the Lifesaving Programs specialist has prepared health certificates and any other transport or off-site adoption requirements in a timely manner.
Responsible for overseeing off-site events utilizing the ARL mobile unit with a growth goal for off-site adoptions and community outreach.
Oversees off-site adoptions via Lifesaving Programs Specialists such as in-store at a Petco or PetSmart including coordination of care, transportation, and facilitation of adoptions for pets off-site. May be a point of contact for in-store locations.
Participates in daily rounds.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities
· Supervise and develop assigned staff within lifesaving programs.
· Oversees workflow of employees, creating team schedules and delegating tasks.
· Training and onboarding new hires to make sure they understand their roles and responsibilities.
· Recommend new employees to Human Resources based on assessment of their performance.
· Assist the Shelter Manager in the development, implementation and maintenance of operational and organizational policies, animal database system and other related software.
· Inventory and ordering to ensure that the staff has the adequate supplies necessary for their role.
· Train, supervise and support leads, specialist staff, and volunteers in daily operations, ensure customer service is always exceptional.
· Model professionalism and exceptional customer service while actively promoting ARL’s mission, services, programs, and events, adhering to ARL’s policies and guidelines, and provide a non-judgmental, positive atmosphere/experience for visitors, callers, online communications, staff, and volunteers.
· Participates in performance evaluation, check-ins, disciplinary action, and training to correct work performance issues and develop talent and skills for team members.
· Assists Shelter Manager with reviewing and completing payroll.
· Ensure proper training, coaching, and development of team members.
· Make suggestions and implement changes to improve the department functionality, such as update and oversee task lists and work with shelter manager to create and enforce protocols.
· Completes and reviews necessary reports to assess productivity and functionality of the department.
· Maintains a high level of communication with the shelter manager and shelter director to keep them abreast of any issues, concerns, or important updates.
Ideal candidate will have the following skills/requirements:
High school diploma or its educational equivalent
Valid and current PA State Driver's License in good standing
Supervisory experience with a demonstrated ability to direct, lead, delegate, problem-solve and develop skills of team members.
Ability to interact with dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, pregnant and nursing animals, small animals, and farm animals in a calm, non-threatening manner.
Ability to work outside in variety of weather conditions doing light/moderate physical labor, as needed.
Ability to positively interact with colleagues, coworkers, and community members from widely varied backgrounds with integrity and honesty throughout all facets of the position, always maintaining confidentiality.
Able to work well under pressure, in emotionally charged situations and handle confrontation politely and professionally while finding a solution.
Exceptional attention to detail with spatial, administrative organizational skills with the ability to multi-task
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; Proficiency with computers and software: MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook and/or Google Sheets, Google Docs, ability to learn shelter software and/or other applications as needed.
A willingness to work as a team member, pitch in as needed and have fun.
Work Environment:
Exposure to odors and airborne particles including animal fur, chemicals and typical materials found in barns (straw, hay, dust, dirt, manure, insects, etc.)
High levels of noise
Can be fast-paced and stressful, working with emotional clients.
Department Hours of operation between 8:30am and 7pm seven days a week, flexible work hours will be required (including holidays, weekends, and overtime)
Physical requirements include being able to withstand prolonged periods of sitting or standing, lifting, or moving up to 50 pounds.
Overtime: This position is eligible for overtime.
