Job Description
The Caroline County Humane Society is seeking a reliable and compassionate individual looking for a unique opportunity in the animal welfare space.
The Medical Care Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all aspects of medical care for animals within the shelter. This position ensures that every animal receives appropriate, timely, and compassionate veterinary care, including preventive health measures, medical treatments, and follow-up care. While this role does not supervise staff directly, it serves as the lead authority on animal health within the shelter and works collaboratively with visiting veterinarians, animal care staff, and shelter leadership to maintain the highest standards of animal care.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee and coordinate the medical care of all shelter animals, from intake through adoption, transfer, or other outcomes in accordance with CCHS Standard Operating Procedures.
- Administer vaccines and medications, perform any necessary diagnostics (snap assay test, fecal floatations, etc) and venipuncture, and perform routine medical exams
- In collaboration with the Executive Director and Animal Care Supervisor, develop, implement, and monitor medical protocols, including vaccination schedules, parasite control, quarantine procedures, and treatment plans.
- Track and maintain accurate medical records for every animal, ensuring compliance with shelter policies, state laws, and shelter medicine standards.
- Act as the liaison between the shelter and external veterinary partners, scheduling appointments, coordinating specialty care, and facilitating communication.
- Monitor the health status of animals daily, identify concerns, and ensure appropriate interventions are taken promptly.
- Collaborate with shelter staff to ensure animals are handled and treated in accordance with best practices for both medical and behavioral well-being.
- Train and guide shelter staff and volunteers on proper medical procedures, medication administration, and infection control practices.
- Work with the Animal Care Supervisor to ensure the shelter is adequately stocked with medical supplies, medications, and equipment; track usage and coordinate ordering.
- Assist with data collection, reporting, and analysis related to medical outcomes, disease trends, and overall animal health.
Required Skills & Knowledge:
- Registered Veterinary Technician (LVT), or Veterinary Assistant with significant shelter/clinic experience, or equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Medical knowledge: applicant must have a strong understanding of shelter medicine and abide by the State of Maryland’s laws and regulations for animal care.
- Communication: applicant should have good oral and written communication skills.
- Certified to perform humane euthanasia in the state of Maryland or willing to get certified within 6 months.
- Ability to stand/walk for several hours and perform physical tasks such as lifting 50lbs and animal restraint.
- Ability to work full-time which may include weekends, holidays and during extreme weather
- Ability to work efficiently and effectively, able to multi-task and handle pressure of caring for multiple animals in the shelter setting.
Work Schedule and Compensation:
Schedule: Full time, Tuesday-Saturday schedule preferred
Benefits: Paid time off/sick time, insurance stipend available
$45K-$48K salary
