Job descriptionThe Shelter Manager will be responsible for the oversight of 10 - 12 employees, up to 10 volunteers and sub-contractors across two teams (Admissions and Animal Care). They will also ensure that all animals are handled and cared for using Fear-Free and force-free principles; shelter animals are provided with high quality care; the shelter environment is maintained using best practices for safety, sanitation, disease control, and stress reduction. The Shelter Manager will work with other teams to ensure that pathway planning for all animals in care begins at intake. This role will require exceptional leadership and management skills, with the ability to effectively communicate and delegate tasks to appropriate staff members.
Key Responsibilities:
Facilitate animal flow and pathway planning to align with the shelter's available resources and capacity for care.
Oversee the daily operations of the shelter, including animal intake and animal care.
Coordinate with other teams to provide high quality care, management of stressors and ensure disease control in the shelter.
Develop programs and provide staff training to promote understanding of animal care in a shelter environment, animal behavior and safe, stress-free animal handling concepts with the goal of improving safety and enhancing animals’ experience while in our care.
Make recommendations on behavioral concerns in animals to be addressed through various pathways such as foster, transfer, adoption, medical/behavioral intervention and euthanasia.
Monitor and counsel as needed direct reports in areas of performance to facilitate team members in working collaboratively, and efficiently to meet the daily shelter needs.
Manage employee work styles, teamwork, and pace to align with daily shelter needs.
Provide regular feedback and coaching to employees to ensure they are meeting performance expectations.
Monitor and ensure that physical and behavioral health needs as well as safety standards are being met daily.
Develop and implement animal husbandry, medical, and behavioral care and sanitation policies and procedures.
Maintain accurate records of animals in care and outcome activities.
Collaborate with the Lifesaving Manager and Director of Operations to establish and achieve shelter goals and objectives.
Prepare and present reports on shelter activities and progress towards goals.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Veterinary Science, or related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in animal care, field services or animal shelter management.
CPDT-KA, CDBC or CSB-D preferred but not required.
Strong leadership and management skills with the ability to effectively delegate tasks and provide feedback.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
Knowledge of animal health and safety standards and procedures.
Ability to work well under pressure and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and shelter management software.
Passion for animal welfare and the ability to work with a diverse group of people.

Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
The employee is required to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, as well as move and traverse within the shelter facility for extended periods, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. The employee is required to communicate, converse with, convey information to, express oneself, and exchange information with shelter staff and the general public. The employee must regularly move, transport, and position items weighing up to 10 pounds, frequently move, transport, and position items weighing up to 25 pounds, and occasionally move, transport, and position items weighing up to 50 pounds. The employee is continuously exposed to animals, animal waste, potentially harmful cleaning chemicals, high noise, and potentially hazardous conditions, including the risk of animal bites and working outdoors for extended periods during cold and extremely hot weather.
