Overview
The Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA (CASPCA) seeks a dedicated and compassionate Shelter Veterinarian to join our mission-driven team. This position plays a key role in advancing the humane treatment of animals by delivering high-quality medical care, performing surgeries, supporting shelter health programs, and promoting community-based veterinary services. Key Responsibilities
Medical & Surgical Care
- Perform physical exams, diagnostics, and treatments for shelter animals, including preventive and responsive care.
- Conduct high-volume spay/neuter surgeries, as well as other soft tissue and occasional orthopedic procedures.
- Ensure all animals receive timely, appropriate medical care aligned with shelter best practices.
- Oversee medical protocols and ensure compliance with applicable laws and standards.
Shelter Medicine Oversight
- Monitor population health and implement disease prevention strategies.
- Collaborate with shelter and clinic teams to develop and maintain treatment plans.
- Participate in daily rounds to ensure continuity of care.
- Support euthanasia decision-making when necessary and in alignment with CASPCA policy.
Public and Community Services
- Provide compassionate, quality care during community clinics (Compassionate Care, vaccine, microchip, and wellness).
- Educate the public on pet health, preventive medicine, and responsible pet ownership.
- Engage with fosters and adopters to support medical success in home placements.
Team Leadership & Collaboration
- Supervise licensed veterinary technicians, assistants, and students as needed.
- Provide training and mentorship in clinical skills and shelter medicine protocols.
- Collaborate with leadership, animal care, and foster teams to support organizational goals.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited institution.
- Licensed or eligible for licensure to practice veterinary medicine in Virginia.
- DEA license or ability to obtain.
- Experience in shelter medicine or high-volume spay/neuter preferred.
- Strong surgical and diagnostic skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends.
Work Environment
- Fast-paced shelter and clinic setting with exposure to animals, including those who are sick or injured.
- Must be able to safely handle animals of all temperaments and sizes.
- Some lifting (up to 50 lbs), bending, and standing for extended periods required.
