The Humane Society of St. Joseph County (HSSJC) is looking for a full-time Shelter Veterinarian to join our mission to enhance the human-animal bond and instill reverence for all life.
As a key member of our leadership team, you’ll play a pivotal role in ensuring the highest quality care for animals, while helping shape our protocols and educational efforts.

• Competitive Salary: $100,000–$125,000 per year based on experience

Key Responsibilities
• Provide medical care for shelter and stray animals: triage, diagnose, treat, and perform surgeries (spay/neuter, hernia repair, lump removal, and more)
• Develop and implement health protocols, including intake exams, vaccinations, and disease prevention
• Lead medical rounds and create treatment plans for shelter animals
• Mentor and support medical and support staff, including training on medical protocols and Fear Free handling
• Oversee the inventory of medical supplies and pharmaceuticals, ensuring compliance with DEA guidelines
• Collaborate with the Leadership Team to support strategic goals and operational needs
Who We’re Looking For
• Doctoral Degree (DVM) and Indiana State license to practice Veterinary Medicine
• 2+ years of veterinary experience preferred (experience in shelter or emergency medicine a plus, but new graduates will be considered)
• Comfort with high-volume spay/neuter and a passion for shelter medicine
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse teams and manage stressful situations
• Must hold or be able to obtain DEA Certification and Indiana CSR License
• A desire to make a difference in the lives of animals and contribute to the overall success of HSSJC
Working Environment
Expect regular exposure to environmental conditions such as zoonotic diseases, noise, odors, and animal-related challenges. Occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs may be required.
