Job Description
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:Medical (75%)
-Care for up to 20 cats and dogs per day in spay/neuter surgery
-Administer injections including anesthetics, pain medications, microchips, vaccinations and other medications
-Induce and intubate animals, place intravenous catheters, perform venipuncture and administer fluids as needed
-Knowledge of emergency stabilization procedures
-Monitor vital signs of sedated and anesthetized patients
-Provide treatments and supportive care according to RVHS standard of care protocols
-Provide a safe and compassionate environment for animals in our care, our staff, and for our clients by using Fear Free handling techniques
-Assist veterinarian with patient exams
-Take medical history, perform diagnostic testing, and prepare medications to go home with the client/patient
-Assist in maintaining all necessary controlled substance drug logs and patient records and maintain knowledge of compliance with DEA regulations and all other laws
-Stay current in knowledge of emergency drugs and protocols
-Ensure anesthetic equipment is functional and report equipment that is not working properly
-Assist in maintaining inventory
-Assist with humane euthanasia in accordance with RVHS standard of care protocols
-Autoclave surgical equipment and knowledge of aseptic technique
-Work with coworkers to clean and disinfect animal areas, equipment, instruments and facility while utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment
-Provide support and medical services in special cases as needed, including evaluation of animals living in hoarding situations
-All duties of a veterinary assistant as needed
Administrative, Training, and Other Duties (25%)
-Communicate with all clients in a non-judgmental, effective and professional manner
-Communicate basic veterinary medical concepts to clients, including, but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks
-Explain information provided by the veterinarian about an animal’s condition to clients
-Enter medical information into digital databases as appropriate
-Represent RVHS in a professional and courteous manner
-Adhere to all protocols put forth by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
-Follow all written and verbally communicated RVHS protocols
-Participate in veterinary/medical training of RVHS staff and volunteers
-Participate in onboarding and training of RVHS surgical staff
-Attend and facilitate staff meetings and discussions
-Commit to doing Continuing Education for continued licensure
-Perform other duties as assigned
Qualifications
-Oregon Certified Veterinary Technician required (priority given to applicants with 3+ years experience)
-Possess outstanding interpersonal communication skills
-Ability to multitask and deal professionally with high levels of stress
-Possess initiative to assist in any area or process, problem solving, seek answers independently and enthusiastically and have flexibility to persist until goals are achieved.
-Ability to work in both a team environment and independently
-Ability to work in physically and mentally challenging conditions
-Flexibility in schedule to accommodate vacations, animal hoarding or critically ill animal cases
-Possess companion animal handling experience
-Must provide a valid driver’s license upon hire
-Possess working knowledge of basic computer/technology skills including email, Microsoft Word, and Clinic HQ
-Ability to lift 35lbs without assistance and over this weight with assistance, and the ability to consistently stand, bend, lift, and climb during the course of a regular work shift
